As the weather gets warmer, work on the outside and inside of the McDowell County Courthouse gets closer to completion. On the front lawn, the Charters of Freedom display will soon be ready for a formal dedication. The flagpole has been returned and now stands in the center of the courthouse lawn.

When complete, the settings for the Charters of Freedom will contain bronze replicas of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The third courtroom section is located on the top level of the County Administration Building’s parking deck, immediately behind the courthouse. This section also has space for attorney conferences, the criminal clerk’s office and the magistrate’s office.

At the rear of the courthouse, the third courtroom addition is nearing completion. County Manager Ashley Wooten said county officials will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for this new addition sometime between now and the end of June.

In March of last year, the commissioners approved the low bid for the construction, which was submitted by Beam Construction at $6,623,300. Holland & Hamrick Architects of Shelby is the architectural firm for this project.

The veterans memorial, which was first erected in the late 1980s, has been cleaned by Blue Ridge Monuments and now faces towards the Charters of Freedom display.
