WHEREAS, September 17, 2026, marks the 239th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States of America by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention; and
WHEREAS, the Constitution laid the foundation for our nation and remains an enduring symbol of liberty, justice, and government under the rule of law; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina was one of the original thirteen states and was represented among the signers of the Constitution by William Blount, Richard Dobbs Spaight, and Hugh Williamson; and
WHEREAS, Constitution Week commemorates the historic events of September 1787, when the Constitution was signed, delivered to Congress and presented to the people of the newly formed nation; and
WHEREAS, Public Law 915 provides for the annual designation of September 17 through 23 as Constitution Week, encouraging citizens to recognize the significance of this historic document and the freedoms, rights, and responsibilities it established;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, J. Douglas Hendrix, Mayor of the City of Statesville, do hereby proclaim September 17 through 23, 2026, as CONSTITUTION WEEK in the City of Statesville and encourage all residents to reflect upon the principles established by the Constitution, safeguard the freedoms it guarantees and continue the work of forming a more perfect union.
