The great outdoors
Latta Nature Preserve

It's got a little bit of everything for you to enjoy: hiking and horseback trails, picnic areas, places to fish, and a kayak launch. It is very peaceful and a beautiful spot to take in the natural qualities of Lake Norman. You can walk through woods, open fields, or along the lake. Keep your eyes out for wildlife such as wild turkeys, foxes, or even bald eagles. One trail that is worth it is the Buzzard Rock Overlook. There's an expansive view of the lake from the top of these boulders. Do not forget your camera. Latta is suitable for both a whole-day trip or a quick visit.

Jetton Park
Another spot to consider is Jetton Park in Cornelius. It has 1.5 miles of smooth, paved trails, shade, and views of the lake. It is the kind of park that encourages a slower pace. You could bring a picnic and eat by the water, lie out on the beach with a towel and a book, or ride a bike along the paths. It also has a playground with slides, climbing walls, and shaded seating for family and friends. It is suited for a nature break or an afternoon outside.
Ramsey Creek Park
Sunsets are a prominent feature at Lake Norman. When the day starts to wind down and the sky begins to light up with pinks, oranges, and yellows, head to Ramsey Creek Park to watch the view. You can spend time on the docks, walk on the trails, or sit on the Patriot Pier fishing dock, the only ADA accessible fishing pier on Lake Norman. There are multiple viewing spots in this park for sunsets. It is one way to conclude your day and reflect on the experience.

It can accommodate visitors who want to entertain children, try a new activity, or exercise with friends.
Carolina Raptor Center
If you're looking for an activity that is different from typical outdoor options, consider the Carolina Raptor Center inside Latta Nature Preserve. It offers an opportunity to see birds of prey such as eagles, owls, and hawks. Visitors walk along an accessible trail through the woods and can look for more than 30 birds. There are interactive exhibits, including live bird demonstrations and a view inside the bird hospital. The visit supports the rehabilitation and release of these birds.
Mountain Island Paddle Co.
If you want to be on the water but prefer not to use a motorized boat, Mountain Island Paddle Co. offers paddles, kayaks, and floats. They are located on the waters of Mountain Island Lake. Whether you have paddled previously or it is your first time, this is a beginner-friendly option. Paddle boards allow you to move at your own pace and observe the surroundings. Staff members provide assistance, and rentals are positioned as an accessible way to spend time on the lake.
Boating rentals
Boating and jet skiing are common activities at Lake Norman. Rentals are available if you do not have access to a personal boat. You can rent a pontoon with Carolina Tiki. A boating license is not required because the rental includes a captain. Another option is CS Rentals, where you can book a jet ski for an afternoon.
Surf lessons
Watersports on Lake Norman include surfing and wakeboarding. Ride Wake and Surf Co. offers experiences for both beginners and visitors with prior experience.
