For 60 years, Don Balke has captured through his artwork vivid and highly detailed images of nature and wildlife. His paintings have found their way into collections all over the United States and beyond. Now, McDowell’s most famous artist is celebrating 60 years of creating paintings that are treasured by art and nature lovers all over the world. He is standing next to his painting “Autumn Splendor,” which features Shortoff Mountain and Table Rock in the background with Lake James in the foreground.

In 1985, he opened his retail gallery at 1374 Vein Mountain Road in southern McDowell. There, you can look at hundreds of framed prints, which are for sale. “It is a beautiful showplace with hundreds of pieces of framed arts (originals, gilcees and lithographs) that can be seen and enjoyed,” reads the news release.
