Twenty-six years ago this week, a wintry mix hit McDowell County making the roads and streets slippery. Those who braved the elements, like this motorist on North Logan Street in Marion, found the going a little dicey. Authorities reported a few weekend accidents saying most people stayed put during the winter weather.
Brian Berryhill, an employee of Spencer’s Hardware, looked over some of the shovels for sale at the store. Shovels would be needed in McDowell during that week because of the snow and ice that fell over the county.
Donald Godfrey of Marion pumped kerosene at U.S. 70’s Kwik Mart. Prices for kerosene and other fuel oils had been rising steadily that winter. At $1.29 a gallon, Godfrey got a little more than three gallons of kerosene. He said two weeks before, it was 99 cents per gallon.
Trooper Jimmie Jones with the N.C. Highway Patrol cut into his cake at his retirement party at the local NCHP station. He had patrolled McDowell County roads since 1979.
During the week of Jan. 27, 2000, the Rotary Club of Marion recognized Julie Elkins and Tiffany Galloway as the Students of the Week. Elkins, a senior, is the daughter of James and Martha Elkins of Marion. She hoped to attend N.C. State University to study veterinary medicine. Galloway, a junior, is the daughter of Allen and Sandra Galloway and Mike and Barbara Banner. She hoped to attend Duke University, study medicine and pursue a career in pediatrics. McDowell High Lady Titans junior Laura Jimison drove to the basket during a game. The Lady Titans defeated Alexander Central’s Lady Cougars 61-44 at a game in Taylorsville. The Lady Titans came out showcasing a sizzling defense that sparked a 14-0 McDowell run in the first quarter and forced 12 Lady Cougar turnovers in the first quarter alone.
Adam Jolly, 14, and Clarrisa Lyons, 3, enjoyed the snowy weather at East McDowell Junior High School. The steep slope next to the school’s track attracted a lot of folks with sleds and snowboards. Clarrisa’s parents said they couldn’t talk her into coming out of the cold.
McDowell Titans wrestler Amos Gilliam (top) tried for the pin during a match. Gilliam picked up his 25th win of the season as McDowell blasted Freedom 52-26. The Titans were scheduled to travel to Watauga for a crucial Northwestern 4A Conference match.
Jimmie Mahan enjoyed his day off from school thanks to the winter weather. Mahan and his classmates were set to return to school on Wednesday, Jan. 26, on a two-hour delay, barring any further winter weather.
Travis Brown, a student at Old Fort Elementary School, spent time at the McDowell County Public Library catching up on his reading during a “snow day.” Students went back to school that week but a predicted winter storm had kids and teachers alike wondering what the next few days held in store.
