Thirty-one years ago this week, the Tour DuPont rolled through McDowell County. In this photo, Tour DuPont riders strain to make the grade on N.C. 226 in the northern corner of McDowell. Race officials called the ninth stage of the race the most grueling and the coldest.
This statue of a giraffe was created by Old Fort sculptor Keith Jennings out of 21 sheets of plywood. Jennings (standing next to his creation) had also created human figures and dragons in his artwork.
Rudy Long demonstrated his pitching in the softball throw contest at the McDowell Senior Games. Contestants competed at Titan Stadium to see how far they can throw a softball during the Senior Games.
McDowell Titan jayvee pitcher Ryan Willis hurled a complete game no-hitter against the Freedom Patriots. Freedom managed only one baserunner in the contest, as the Titans won 1-0.
During the week of May 19, 1995, McDowell High senior Lisa Johnson (left) spoke with State Treasurer Harlan Boyles during his visit to McDowell County. Johnson was a member of the State Board of Education and was planning to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the fall of 1995.
McDowell Titan head baseball coach Dennis “Flea” Blake got a victory shower from senior infielder Junior Talley after the Titans defeated Watauga, 2-1. The victory gave McDowell its first Northwestern 4A regular season title and its second state playoff berth in the past three years.
These breakaway riders led the Tour DuPont race through the Pleasant Gardens community and then came the rest of the pack. Here, they make their way off of U.S. 70 West and onto N.C. 80 to begin one of the toughest climbs of the day.
McDowell High School senior Nhu Ly (right) received the Marshall Dark Sr. Merit Scholarship for the Rotary Club of Marion. She was presented the scholarship by School Superintendent David Ricketts, who is also a Rotarian. The $2,000 scholarship is presented annually by the club to two graduating seniors at McDowell High.
The Downtown Business Association had a new group of officers and directors for 1995-96. Little Miss McDowell Ashleigh Logan performed a tap dance routine to the song “What the Cowgirls Do.” She was a 1995 scholarship winner and performed during the NJROTC awards banquet.
During the week of May 19, 1995, 29 members of the East McDowell Junior High School Band participated in the North Carolina Solo and Ensemble Competition held at Appalachian State University. At the competition, 17 of the junior high’s groups received superior ratings and two groups received excellent ratings, the most ever. The ninth-grade students who participated were (front row, from left) Christina DeLuca, Heather Judd, Jennifer Hollifield and Leigh Tomenski and (back row) Judy Buchanan, Stephanie Condrey, Jonathan Arrowood and Jon Franklin.
This team of 23 eighth- and ninth-grade students from West McDowell Junior High scored within the top 13th percentile nationwide in the Knowledge Masters Open. They were coached by teacher Sandra Setzer.
