During the week of Sept. 15, 2001, the Marion City Council honored Joe and Modean “Mo” Frisbee as the Citizens of the Month for September. Joe Frisbee worked for many years in Marion with Biltmore Dairy, Smith Furniture and Western Auto. His wife Mo was known for her musical performances with the Sunset Girls Trio and her playing of the piano. She played the piano for the Marion Rotary Club and taught music to many local students. Councilman Lloyd Cuthbertson, left, selected the Frisbees for this honor. Mayor Everette Clark, right, presented them with a certificate.

McDowell High School’s NJROTC walked away with plenty of first-place trophies at the annual Newton-Conover Field Meet. The cadets captured nine out of 13 possible first-place standings and finished first overall.

McDowell Titans quarterback Justin Dalton was set to make an option pitch to Matt Reel. The Titans scored on the play, their second play from scrimmage, and went on to a 28-0 victory over the R-S Central Hilltoppers.

Gas prices throughout the nation rose after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. In McDowell County, prices jumped 20 cents a gallon or more at some local stations while others held steady.

Twenty-five years ago this week, different generations enjoyed the sounds of country and bluegrass music each Friday night at Old Fort Mountain Music. Musicians played inside the Rockett building and in the parking lot.

Members of the Marion Moose Lodge and employees of the Marion Minimum Security Unit were on Lake James and marked the trashiest spots for the annual Big Sweep. Al Reel; Ted Laney; Linda Anderson, an officer at the prison; and Perry Franklin, a unit manager at the prison, found this huge pile of bottles and cans near a campsite.

Twenty-five years ago this week, Sharon Smith, left, treasurer and newsletter editor for the McDowell Woman’s Club, received the GFWC-NC Newsletter Award for women’s clubs in North Carolina. This was the third year in a row the McDowell Woman’s Club won this award on the district and state level. Pictured with her is GFWC-NC State President Teresa Lee.

Kasey Mock, left, and Heather Seals, right, were recognized as the Students of the Week by the Rotary Club of Marion. Mock, a junior at McDowell High, was the daughter of Larry and Ida Mock of Old U.S. 221 South in Marion. After graduating from high school, she planned to attend N.C. State University or Western Carolina University. Seals, a senior at McDowell High, was the daughter of Gene and Elaine Seals of Glen Alpine. After graduation, she planned to attend Emory University to study law and/or criminology. They were presented to the club by Rotarian Bob Boyette, center.

Side Street, a local rock ‘n’ roll band, was scheduled to perform at the McDowell Chamber of Commerce’s annual fundraiser “Evening in the Mountains” scheduled for Sept. 15, 2001, at the Switzerland Inn in Little Switzerland. The event featured an appetizing meal and a silent auction featuring more than 160 items donated by area businesses and individuals.

Second-grade students at Marion Elementary School got a close look at Rawhide, the drug enforcement K-9 with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office. Lt. Roscoe Bailey brought the 7-year-old German shepherd to the school. The students were able to see Rawhide at work and asked a variety of questions.

Ellen Silver of Marion was honored in front of a crowd of 3,500 for being the No. 1 consultant in the nation for Princess House products. The award was given at a conference in San Antonio. She thanked both Zion Hill Baptist Church and Grace Community Church for their support.

The Coral Reef, Marion’s newest aquarium, fish and supply store, opened in the downtown. Owner Tony Finelli said his store offers a full line of fresh and saltwater fish, filters, food and aquariums. The store was located at 671 E. Court St. in Marion next to the Nature’s Cupboard.

During the week of Sept. 15, 2001, 18 classes at West Marion Elementary School participated in a parade to celebrate the migration of the monarch butterflies to Mexico. Teacher Autumn Stanley, the resident butterfly expert at the school, organized the parade. In this early color photo for The McDowell News, student Elizabeth Case gets accustomed to her monarch wings.
