Twenty-nine years ago this week, McDowell County United Way volunteers gathered at the Hook & Anchor restaurant for the official kickoff to the 1997-1998 campaign. Volunteers planned to raise $245,000 to help local people. Leaders at the banquet included (from left) Amanda Bowman, interim executive director; Teresa Pope, campaign co-chair; Jim Miller, vice president; Charlie Mae Holland, president; and Jeff Wakefield, campaign co-chair.

Inmates from the N.C. Department of Correction gave a helping hand with the renovation project at the McDowell County Courthouse. The 1923 building got a much-needed facelift, and the work was scheduled to be finished before the next session of Superior Court.

During the week of Sept. 8, 1997, Annette Bryant, owner and general manager of WBRM, was named the Downtown Business Person of the Year at the Downtown Business Association Banquet.

All 204 students at North Cove Elementary School were in attendance on Thursday. Principal Lou Jane Friesland treated the whole school to slushy drinks in honor of the occasion.

Workers began demolition and renovation work in the main courtroom at the McDowell County Courthouse. This worker, an employee of Bonitz Insulation, was busy removing the old ceiling for a new one, which would be installed. In addition, new overhead lights would be put in.

The N.C. Mountain State Fair was held at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center and Fairgrounds in Fletcher, just south of Asheville. Attractions included a petting zoo, pig races, a gospel singing contest and the annual clogging competition and rides like this giant Ferris wheel. McDowell News photographer Bonnie Byrd was there and took this photo.

Pleasant Gardens Elementary students did a lot of things with these flying discs. Here, they walked around the gym balancing them on their heads. When a flying disc fell, someone had to pick it up and place it back on the owner’s head, along with a “Thank you” and “You’re welcome.”

Members of the Greenlee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution hold up a proclamation from the city of Marion designating Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week in honor of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. McDowell’s Jason Twitty looks for running room during a game against R-S Central. Twitty led all rushers with 92 yards, but it wasn’t enough as the Titans lost a hard-fought game in overtime to the Hilltoppers, 9-6.

The new mental health center for McDowell County was found to be built in the wrong place. Officials said an architect will pay any costs associated with correcting an encroachment that occurred when the center was located 15 feet over the property line.

A portion of U.S. 70 near the Marion bypass was closed over the weekend while crews paved. The work made it difficult on Sunday for some to reach local restaurants. Many motorists ignored the signs, only to have to turn back when reaching barricades.
