Twenty-six years ago this week, ninth-grader Joey Anderson was named as the Student of the Week by The McDowell News. The East McDowell Junior High School student was both a musician and a sportsman. He played drums, piano and guitar and was selected to serve as a band tutor to younger students. He was the son of Larry and Rebecca Anderson of Nebo.

The MACA building in downtown Marion was getting a makeover. A painter climbed into a cherry picker to prepare the area where the false windows would be placed. The renovation project was paid for with grants and corporate help.

Local leaders were looking forward to the renovation of the Marion and Old Fort depots as part of the state’s effort to bring passenger rail service to the mountains. This is what the Marion depot looked like at that time. The state had allocated more than $1.3 million to move the Marion depot, which was requested by its owner Norfolk Southern Corp. as part of the negotiations with the state about passenger rail. Old Fort was slated to receive almost $1 million for the rehabilitation of its depot and to make track improvements. Officials with the N.C. Rail Division predicted passenger trains would return to the western part of the state by 2001.
