To address the ongoing concerns of pedestrian and student safety while crossing South Magnolia Street between the Mooresville High School and Magnolia Campus, the Town of Mooresville, in conjunction with Mooresville Graded School District (MGSD), concluded an independent third-party street safety assessment in February 2024. This assessment provided short-term and long-term recommendations for the corridor. Over the past two years, the Town has completed many of those recommendations including:
To further address the ongoing safety concerns at the crossing, the Town is committed to balancing pedestrian safety with other public safety considerations including the ability of Police and Fire-Rescue Departments to respond to all residents effectively and quickly, while also ensuring mobility and accessibility for all residents at the location and also for those who travel through that area of Town.
The solution that best meets the needs of all residents in this area includes the following safety enhancements:
installation of an additional traffic signal for a total of two signals to stop all vehicular traffic in both directions on Magnolia, when activated
four automated gate arms to stop all vehicular traffic in both directions on Magnolia, when activated; creating two protected crosswalk locations.
All safety enhancements will have manually activated controls operated by an individual who is within the line-of-sight, to ensure traffic safety at all times.
The estimated cost for these safety improvements will be approximately $500,000. The $250,000 budget amendment approved at the August 3 Board of Commissioners meeting represents the Town’s commitment to continued partnership and collaboration with MGSD to provide safety for all in the Mooresville community.
