The McDowell News and other area news media were taken on a behind-the-scenes tour of the set for “The Last of the Mohicans.” The $40 million major motion picture was being filmed on the shores of Lake James during the summer of 1991. In this photo, a makeup artist carefully painted a tattoo on the face of a Native American movie extra. “The Last of the Mohicans” starred Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe and Russell Means and was directed by Michael Mann.

Dale Dye talked with extras who were portraying French soldiers in the movie. The film, which was an adaptation of the classic James Fenimore Cooper novel, was being shot during the summer of 1991 in western North Carolina, including locations in Burke and McDowell counties.

During the tour at the Lake James site, a press conference was held featuring producer Hunt Lowry (left), director Michael Mann (center) and N.C. Secretary of State Rufus Edmisten. The mammoth replica of Fort William Henry was constructed on a hill overlooking Lake James for the movie, and much of the shooting for this epic historical romance centered around that set during July 1991.

An employee of the Harris-Teeter supermarket in the Lady Marian Plaza received one of four threatening phone calls to the business. Employees and customers at the Harris-Teeter were cleared from the store after an anonymous caller said he had placed a bomb in the building. Marion firefighters responded to the call as a precautionary measure, but the calls were found to be hoaxes.

East Court Motor Co. in Marion was honored with a top performance award from the GMC Truck Division, noting the dealership’s outstanding performance and achievement. The award recipients were Myles Brooks, service advisor; E.R. Brown Jr., dealer and operator; Frank Sentelle, parts and service director; and Mickey Poteat, sales manager.

West Marion Elementary School moved from its old building on Sugar Hill Road to the new $6.1 million facility at the intersection of Sugar Hill and Marler roads. In the photo on the left, West Marion teacher Shirley Knox stood at the window of her old classroom and lowered chairs outside for loading onto a moving van. In the photo on the right, School Superintendent David Ricketts hauls one of the hundreds of boxes into the new school building. About 50 local educators and students helped move the contents from the old building into the new one in one day.
