During the week of Jan. 6, 1975, fire roared through the old First Methodist Church building at the intersection of Fort and Logan streets. Constructed in 1908, the structure was the oldest of its kind in the city of Marion and was the home for many years for the First Methodist Church. By that time, it had become property of the First Baptist Church after First Methodist moved to its current building on Robert Street. The graceful brick structure had not been used for church purposes for some time and was scheduled for demolition before the massive fire. The fire also resulted in a power outage during the bitterly cold weather. In this photo, workers with Western Carolina and Westco Telephone companies are seeking to restore electrical service to 1,554 customers who were without power due to the damage to a telecommunications line when fire ripped through the old building.
