Twenty-three years ago this week, Jason Broadwater, one-half of the duo Broadwater Graham, played his guitar in his home recording studio. At 27, Broadwater had already founded an independent production house, Prose Productions. Single-handedly taking care of producing, distributing, booking, recording, engineering, publishing and graphic design, the McDowell musician already had several CDs and a self-published novel to his credit.
Downtown Marion showed its support for America’s troops who were serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The previous week, the Marion City Council voted unanimously to approve the placing of yellow ribbons at intersections in the downtown. In this photo, DBA Director Freddie Killough puts up a yellow ribbon. City employees also placed American flags throughout Marion’s central business district as a way to showing support.
The children of First Baptist of Marion child care center celebrated the Easter season with food and festivities. Pictured were (from left) Chase Harris, Cole England, Katelyn Smith, Morgan Wylie and Antoine Lindsey.
Downtown Marion welcomed TammyMartha’s to the small building at 60 S. Main St. next to MACA. The baker and confectionary business featured homemade truffles, fudge, cookies, candy, muffins and bread. At the grand opening were (from left) Ashley Arnold, Alicia Shearin, Glenn Arnold, owner Tammy Rochester, Jay Rochester, Bill Bell and Tim Shearin.
During the week of April 21, 2003, downtown Marion welcomed Iron Gate Interiors to 23 N. Logan St. Located next to the Crooked Door Coffee House in the same building as The Garden Path, Iron Gate Interiors carried an eclectic mix of home furnishings and accessories, along with a full line of Kasmir fabrics. Owner Tera D. Willis is pictured in her new business.
The West Marion Bad Boys won the McDowell Junior Pro Basketball Midge League Tournament. The McSmiles preschool program celebrated its annual pet day. In this photo, Summer Rose, 4, showed off her puppy Nibbles. Her teachers were Dawn Vetter and Debbie Lewis.
McDowell Lady Titans senior center Erin May was selected to play in the annual East-West All-Star game in July of that year. In this photo, she scored two points during the Lady Titans’ game with Vance in the Western Regional Finals.
McDowell Lady Titans first baseman Erin May put the tag on a baserunner during a game. McDowell defeated Watauga 6-2 to improve to 9-9 overall and 4-4 in the Northwestern 4A Conference.
The building project at Pleasant Gardens Elementary put the McDowell County Board of Education in a bind when the construction company went bankrupt. In addition, the school system’s pay-as-you-go building plan was in trouble as allocations to the local fund decreased.
