Forty-seven years ago this week, the top spellers from McDowell County’s junior high and elementary schools squared off for the annual spelling bee and these students were the top three spellers. They were (from left to right) Susan Kirstein, an eighth grader at East McDowell Junior High, the McDowell County champion; Tina Lavik, an eighth grader at West McDowell Junior High; third; and Valerie Allison, a sixth grader at Old Fort Elementary, second.

Forty-seven years ago this week, these were the winners in the 4-H Fashion Revue, which was held at the McDowell Arts Center. They were (from left to right) Melanie Tilson, Teresa Ellis, Regina Tipton, Karen Stockton, Robin Crowder, Dawn Guinn, Deanna Buchanan, Joann Ledford and Johnny Edwards.

Forty-seven years ago this week, these were the winners in the 4-H Share the Fund talent contest. They were (from left to right) Robin Crowder, piano and singing; Angela Ellis and Teresa Ellis, piano duet; and Carol Anne Wacaster, tap dance. They had the opportunity to participate in the District 4-H Activity Day and to audition to perform at Carowinds in the summer.

Forty-seven years ago this week, Amy Gross, arts and crafts instructor for the McDowell Recreation Commission, was shown with three of her 13 watercolor art students as they prepared to exhibit their work in the McDowell County Public Library. Forty-seven years ago this week, these were the winners of the three divisions in the Pinewood Derby competition for members of Cub Scout Pack 805 in Pleasant Gardens. They were (from left to right) Jonathan Slaton, Division I; Tommy Johnson, Division II; and Chris Edwards, Design and Workmanship Division.

During the week of April 2, 1976, the Old Fort Globetrotters basketball team and their coaches were honored by their families at a covered dish supper at Old Fort First Baptist Church. After the meal, a plaque was presented to Coach Nelson Langley by the team and a short program of appreciation was presented by the parents. The Globetrotters won 24 straight games, losing only to the Marion Tigers to place second in the Junior Pro tournament. The team was comprised of three fifth-graders and five fourth-graders. The players were (from left to right) Keith Jamison, Tony Lewis, Craig Thomas, Ronald “Poon” Hausley, Eric Lytle, Bryant McEntire, Larry Gouge and Darren Hopper. In the back row were Coach Nelson Langley and Assistant Coach Eddie Manley.

During the week of April 2, 1976, Distributive Education students at McDowell High School operated the newly opened school store which was sells Titans shirts and jackets and school supplies. Shown here in the store are students Tina Lovingood, Johnny Banks, Janie Ward and Kathy Randolph.

During the week of April 2, 1976, McDowell High golf team easily won their second meet of the season at the Marion Lake Club as they fired a team total of 311 to take an 11 shot win over their nearest opponent. The victory for the Titans, their second in three matches, upped their lead in total strokes to 19 for the season. Their closest opponent is Hickory High School. In this photo, Brian Reep, McDowell’s number 3 golfer, came close to tying for the medalist honors as he fired a two over 72 for the 18 holes.

During the week of April 2, 1976, the Marion Jaycees presented two high awards in a ceremony. They were (from left to right) Gary Mace, named Outstanding Educator; Lee Sutton, Jaycee president, who presented the awards; J.R. Mabe, Distinguished Service Award winner; and Lloyd Cuthbertson, DSA Banquet chairman.

During the week of April 2, 1976, students in Mrs. Ann Rockette’s second- and third-grade combination at Marion Elementary School celebrated the nation’s Bicentennial by dressing up as famous Americans of the past. The characters ranged from Betsy Ross, Martha Washington and Mary Todd to Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, George Washington, Paul Revere, a Minuteman, President James Buchanan and the Spirit of ’76. Participating were Leesa Hicks, Sherry Hollifield, Betsy Keenan, Donna Dillingham, Angie Hunter, Wendy Young, Kim Smith, Alice McCall, Heather Forbis, Joe Hollifield, Chad Hardin, Tod Hyche, Jeff Parker, Shawn Coggins, Kevin McIntosh, David Smith, Dwyatte McKinney, Kevin Buchanan, Greg Buchanan and Chris Hendley.

During the week of April 2, 1976, it looked as if Daniel Boone (Ray Smith) was in a bit of trouble and has been clamped in the stocks in Mrs. Ray Cline’s fourth- and fifth-grade classroom at Marion Elementary School. His friends were (from left to right) Angela Thomas, Derrek Baldwin and Chris Slagle, but they didn’t appear to be overly concerned.

During the week of April 2, 1976, Oliver Cross of Cross Cotton Mills (right) presented scholarship certificates to Robin Crowder (left) and Joann Ledford for being the top winners in the age 14 and older category at the county 4-H Fashion Revue held at the McDowell Arts Center.
