Twenty-nine years ago this week, Lake James State Park was a popular spot for sun seekers and a rise in temperatures brought some brave souls out for a swim and a splash.
Fire broke out at the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on U.S. 70 West in Marion. Investigators had ruled out arson as a cause. The blaze started in the back of the restaurant. While no one was injured, the fire caused an estimated $80,000 in damage.
Donna Brown, Jennifer Brown and Kim Sherrill did the landscaping work around the fountain at the base of Old Fort’s Arrowhead Monument. Jennifer was the owner of Green Meadow Lawn Care and Landscaping. She drew up a plan and submitted it to the town and they hired her to the job. Her mother Donna and sister Kim helped her with planting various annuals.
Ernesto Paniagua filled buckets of strawberries to the brim at Glenn and Mildred Bryson’s strawberry field in McDowell County. The crop yielded fewer berries that year because of a late frost.
Jennifer (pictured) and Robert Cloud of Old Fort opened Books & Things in the Lady Marian Plaza in Marion. The store carried both hardback and paperback new and used books and an assortment of gift items.
The pool at the McDowell Recreation Center was jumping with approximately 200 people when the weather got hot and drier. After nearly two weeks of clouds, local youngsters were ready to get outdoors.
During the week of June 16, 1997, officials with McDowell Technical Community College honored students who have been included in the publication Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. The students who were honored include (from left) Lisa Bradford, college transfer to UNCA; Wendi Browne Evans, majoring in marketing; Deborah Ford, majoring in general education; Lisa Laughter, majoring in business computer programming; and Shelia Mason, commercial graphics. Susan Kanipe, who was studying for an associate degree in nursing, was unavailable for photo.
Officials with McDowell Technical Community College honored employees who had worked at the college for 10 years, 15 years and 20 years. These honored employees were (from left) 10-year employee Mary Yarbrough, interim director of adult basic skills/HRD; 15-year employees Jeannie Edwards, administrative assistant to the president, Riley Harklerode, maintenance staff, and Jean Willis, instructor of cosmetology; and 20-year employee Max Ledbetter, instructor of business administration.
Officials with McDowell Technical Community College honored college employees who have worked for five years. These employees (from left) Sue Benton, publications specialist; Diana Bradley, teacher in the Child Development Center; Lisa Byrd, financial aid assistant/admissions officer; Phyllis Cloninger, day receptionist/secretary; Brad Ledbetter, coordinator of occupational training; Terri McClelland, instructor of science; and Dorothy Ramsey, purchasing secretary.
Extensive road repairs on Baldwin Avenue in Marion led to the closing of the intersection with Rutherford Road. The work resulted in a new left turn lane for Baldwin Avenue. The junction was reopened later that week.
Eastfield Wildcat pitcher Josh Gallion was all concentration as he delivered a pitch during a youth league game at Maple Leaf Sports.
Scott Noblitt and Tully Frady enjoyed their summer vacation by playing at the Marion Community Building’s park.
