Thirty-four years ago this week, Foothills Community Theatre presented its first workshop theater offering, “The Arkansas Bear.” This play was a charming children’s fantasy about a dancing bear who wishes on a star to pass on his legacy of dance to another performer. The cast of this play took a break during the rehearsals to pose for The McDowell News. Brad Harmon, a veteran of nine Foothills productions, directed this play. He had seen it performed at Western Piedmont Community College when he was a student there and knew that he would direct it someday.

The McDowell Chamber of Commerce recognized John Karas as the 1991 Volunteer of the Year and Dot Baldwin as the winner of the 1991 Citizenship Award. The award was presented at the Chamber’s annual banquet.

During the week of Jan. 20, 1992, Bill Morris of Mars Hill was the featured entertainer at the Monday Afternoon Muse program at the Mountain Gateway Museum in Old Fort. Morris picked and sang old-time Southern Appalachian tunes at the museum.

West McDowell’s Scott Killough (40) battled two East Burke players during a seventh- and eighth-grade game at West. The Spartans started strong and downed the Raiders 59-37, helping West sweep East Burke.

Visitors at the Mountain Gateway Museum in Old Fort could warm themselves by a homey fire on the cold winter days. In this photo, Bill Stronach, president of the Caldwell County Historic Association, stopped at the museum and took the opportunity to enjoy McDowell’s warm hospitality.

Titan’s center Darren Moore leaps forward as teammate Brian Franklin and Hickory center Clayton Simon clear out of the way. McDowell remained undefeated with an 89-77 win over the Hickory Red Tornadoes and stayed on top of the Northwestern 4A Conference rankings.

East McDowell Junior High ninth-graders Billy Miller, Mishell Brewer and Summer Perkins were auditioned and selected to participate in the Northwestern Junior High Band Clinic in Lincolnton on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

This task force made up of junior high educators and administrators was busy studying the possibility of implementing the middle school philosophy at McDowell’s two junior high schools. The task force members were Barbara Pool, Charlene Hollifield, Jill Elliott, Lori Hathaway, Angela Autrey, Fran Robert, Janis Leslie, Buddy Helton, Martha Baker, Willie Mae Ledbetter, Jo Trippie and Dottie McKesson.
