Forty-seven years ago this week, McDowell County Sheriff Bob R. Haynes (second from left) had to be “restrained” by Recreation Director James Hardin, following a challenge issued by EMS Director Bill Rosenfeld (second from right). Rosenfeld was being held back by Jack Roper, fundraising chairman of the McDowell County Heart Fund. This staged photo was taken to illustrate Rosenfeld challenging the sheriff’s office to compete in a March 10 basketball game to raise money for the Heart Fund. Tickets were $1 each.
During the week of March 3, 1979, the McDowell Chamber of Commerce held an executive luncheon at the Crossbow Restaurant in Marion. Chamber President Ed Ghent and Executive Director Richard C. Wilson were the hosts of the luncheon. Richard V. Holloman (background, standing) area manager of the Dale Carnegie organization, was the featured speaker. The workshops covered such topics as self confidence, enthusiasm, communications and problem solving.
Brownie Scout Marty Fender, 8, was one of many Scouts in McDowell who took orders for Girl Scout cookies. Lena Westall of Lake Tahoma Road is pointing out to Marty that she and her family especially enjoy the Peanut Butter Sandwich cookies but would also try the new granola cookies that the Girl Scouts were offering that year. Marty Fender was a third-grade student at Pleasant Gardens Elementary and a member of Troop No. 382.
McDowell High’s Carroll Lewis goes up for a shot in a game with Hickory High. Lewis averaged 18.4 points per game that year for the Titans.
McDowell High’s Cynthia Jackson is shown scoring two points against Freedom High. She scored a total of 41 points and was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
A new organization for singles in McDowell County, called Positive Singles, held its first meeting at the First United Methodist Church of Marion. The meeting featured a covered-dish dinner. Etheleen Dover was the director of the new singles group.
These boys proved to be the speedball champions at East McDowell Junior High. Speedball is a combination of basketball, football and soccer and Richard Laney was their coach. They called themselves Huskins’ Cougars. The members of the team were (from left) Bobby Huskins, Brian Christy, Andy Arrowood, Ronnie Bolick, Teddy Queen, Todd Gibbs, Brian Hutchins and David Logan.
Test well drilling started in Old Fort as the town began its conversion from surface water to ground water. Old Fort residents voted in a special bond referendum to update the water system, which was 65 years old in 1979. Mayor Jack Lytle (left) is talking with an employee of the drilling company hired by the town to do the job.
The rock musical “Godspell” was performed in the auditorium of McDowell Technical Community College. The musical drew a standing-room-only crowd so therefore a command performance was scheduled for the following weekend.
McDowell County experienced some unusually warm weather for this time of the year during the week of March 3, 1979. For several days, temperatures were in the mid-60s and these young people took advantage of the warm and sunny weather to enjoy a game of basketball at the county Rec Center in Marion.
