Thirty-seven years ago this week, the East Marion Pentecostal Holiness Church tabernacle, having stood on a site off Baldwin Avenue for almost 70 years, was scheduled to be torn down or burned the following week after serving as the meeting place for the Western North Carolina Conference for most of those years. The old wooden building was beyond repair and church officials were deciding if it should be taken down piece by piece or if it would be used for controlled burning for firefighter training. Today, the Tabernacle Community Garden in East Marion is located on the site where the old gathering place for prayer meetings and revival services once stood.
