When Hurricane Helene swept through McDowell County, the massive storm washed away the foundation of a historic mountain church in the Buck Creek community.
This is the site of Sunnyvale Baptist Church as it looks today.
This photo of Sunnyvale Baptist Church was taken right after Hurricane Helene swept through. Although the structure looked intact, much of the foundation underneath it was washed away. As a result, the building had to be demolished.
Inside, all of the stained-glass windows were removed for use in the planned new building. The bell and steeple were likewise taken out and saved for future use.
Although the building is gone, the members gather on Sunday mornings at Westmoreland Funeral Home in downtown Marion to continue their services and keep the church going. The Rev. Jim Buchanan is the pastor.
