Twenty-six years ago this week, friends Dean McFalls, on tractor, and Alan Jugar, who were doing landscaping work at the new McDowell County Health Department on Spaulding Road, were so close to their dogs that they brought them to work every day. Missy (white dog) rode the tractor with Dean while Schatz chased, but didn’t retrieve, rocks at the construction site.

A pair of old pecan trees which stood in front of the historic McDowell House were cut down. The trees were taken down in order to make room for a new and wider highway which would pass by the historic structure.

A total of 11 eighth- and ninth-grade band students from East McDowell Junior High School auditioned for the Northwestern Band Clinics, which would be held in February at Appalachian State University and Lenoir-Rhyne College. The eighth-grade students who auditioned were, front row, from left, Carl Lerch, Jessyca Gardin, Karen Buchanan, Kala Harris and Lee Marie Ayers. The ninth-grade students were, back row, from left, Christopher Cline, Stephanie Owens, Julie Elkins, Karen Helton, Robert Cheek and Wesley Davenport. Helton, Elkins and Cline were chosen for the Symphonic Band to be held at ASU during Feb. 21-23, 1997.

McDowell Titan guard David Delgado launched a jumper during a game. The Titans defeated Alexander Central 71-61 that week.

McDowell Titan 125-pounder Brandon Thompson, top, got control of his opponent during a wrestling match. Thompson defeated East Burke’s Ashley Huffman 5-4 but the Titans lost the match 57-13. McDowell was then 6-6 overall and 2-6 in the Northwestern 4A Conference.

McDowell Lady Titan post player Lara Seagle went up for two points during a game while teammate Jennifer Brooks looks on. McDowell whipped Alexander Central 84-68 to begin the Northwestern 4A Conference season 1-0.

During the week of Jan. 22, 1997, Barbara “Bobbie” Young, left, received the 1996 Citizenship Award while Katie Rose was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award at the McDowell Chamber of Commerce banquet.

During the week of Jan. 22, 1997, Dr. Neil Shuman and his volunteers performed a skit for an audience at the McDowell County Public Library in Marion. Shuman was the author of the book on which the Michael J. Fox movie “Doc Hollywood” was based. He was the featured entertainer at the McDowell Chamber of Commerce banquet and visited local schools, senior centers and the county library, performing standup routines appropriate to each age group.

The Rotary Club of Marion recognized the Students of the Week. Carrie Brewer, left, daughter of Johnny and Kathy Brewer of Marion, was a senior at McDowell High School with plans to attend Wingate College or Appalachian State University. B.T. Hollifield, right, a junior, was the son of Tony and Frances Hollifield. He hoped to attend Cornell University to study computer science upon graduation. They were introduced to the club by Rotarian Sam Paul Combs, center.
