Thirty-nine years ago this week, Rotarian Pat Davis gave this antique pump organ a try as, from left, Rotarian Gordon Morris, Marion Rotary Club President Dan Davis and auctioneer Gilbert Hollifield look on. The organ, donated by Lyn Hagna, was only one of several items, including two cars, which were scheduled to be auctioned off at the annual Marion Rotary Club Auction on Sept. 27 at the Marion Community Building. Other items included antique rockers, chairs, tables, new furniture, a new set of golf clubs, a home computer, household items, books, office equipment, bicycles and more. Proceeds would benefit Rotary projects such as picnics for children, scholarships and programs for the elderly.

Old Fort’s Joe Grant Jr. said “a rich man wants something he can ride” and went on to say his bull Sam was better than any horse or mule for “sleddin’, draggin’, loggin’, plowin’ or pullin’ a wagon.”

Donna and Aaron Adams of Marion enjoyed Saturday nights with the Wagonmasters Square Dance Club, which met every week at the Marion Community Building.

A Marion man escaped safely from this car after it overturned on Main Street due to a two-car collision. The accident occurred at the corner of Main and Fort streets in front of McCall-Kirksey Funeral Home after the driver of the overturned car ran a red light, according to the Marion police.

During the week of Sept. 19, 1984, McDowell County Sheriff Bob Haynes, left, and Detective Rick Smith examined a portion of the most recent marijuana harvest. Haynes said the department harvested around $75,000 worth of the illegal substance with some plants standing 18 feet tall.

The upcoming Mountain Glory festival in downtown Marion was scheduled to feature the Big Zucchini Washboard Bandits. This band had played festivals, fairs, schools and colleges and special audiences all along the East Coast. Promoters of the Mountain Glory festival said the Big Zukes were just the right entertainment for the event. The festival was scheduled to be held later in October on South Logan Street between Court and Henderson streets.

U.S. Rep. Jamie Clarke, left, and his wife exchange greetings with McDowell County Commissioner Ron Byrd, right. Clarke, a Democrat, greeted some 250 supporters at a barbecue and square dance at Historic Carson House. Clarke was seeking a second term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

During the week of Sept. 19, 1984, Titans senior quarterback Craig McGinnis, 8, prepared to fire a perfect 31-yard pass to Byron Boyd at a game in Hudson. The Titans toppled the South Caldwell Spartans by a convincing 26-8 score.

Lynn Good comforted a dying Gene Gallelli in a dramatic scene from the musical “Carousel,” one of the four productions brought together to create the show “Rodgers and Hammerstein on Broadway,” which was scheduled to be performed by Foothills Community Theater in the auditorium of East McDowell Junior High. It was directed by Sam Paul Combs and accumulated the best music and scenes from “Carousel,” “The Sound of Music,” “South Pacific” and “Oklahoma.”

The show was scheduled to be performed by Foothills Community Theater in the auditorium of East McDowell Junior High and accumulated the best music and scenes from “Carousel,” “The Sound of Music,” “South Pacific” and “Oklahoma.”

Charlie Mae Holland and Dr. David Ricketts received district awards from the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Personnel. In a 15-county competition, Holland was picked as educational person of the year and Ricketts was named as administrator of the year.
