During the week of Nov. 25, 1998, McDowell News Staff Writer Richelle Bailey was recognized with the Outstanding Journalism Award for a series of articles published in July 1998 about the IMPACT program, a strictly regimented paramilitary system that turns convicted criminals into well-manner, responsible men and women. This was the second journalism award for Bailey and it came from the N.C. Correctional Association.
Twenty-seven years ago this week, the streets of Marion were lined with young and old alike as they enjoyed the 1998 Christmas parade, sponsored by the Marion Downtown Business Association. This float featured Miss Jacie’s School of Dance.

A variety of valuable items from the estate of the late Grace Corpening were sold on the auction with the proceeds going to the Maxwell M. Corpening Jr. Memorial Foundation, which benefits needy residents of McDowell. Grace Hickock Corpening, the widow of Lt. Col. Maxwell M. Corpening Sr., died in May 1998 at the age of 91. She was the sole remaining family beneficiary of the Maxwell M. Corpening Trust, which set up the foundation. The auction was conducted by Gilbert J. Hollifield Auction & Realty Co. at 304 S. Main St. in Marion.
The STAY After 3 program at East Junior High, chose Dora Butler, a sixth-grader at Eastfield Elementary, as the November Student of the Month. Butler was selected based on her excellent attendance, leadership and good behavior. Angela Johnson, STAY’s new assistant, presented Dora with a trophy and a certificate of appreciation.
McDowell High student-athlete Kelly Landreth was a finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. Landreth would go on to receive the highly prestigious award.
McDowell County Habitat for Humanity completed a new home in Old Fort. Johnny and Vesta Adkins and their six children stand in front of the latest Habitat home in McDowell.
Teacher Maria Bristol’s kindergarten students at Nebo Elementary enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner. The kids had special headbands for the occasion. The number of feathers they got depended on their good behavior. Those with the most feathers got to sit at a special table.
Students at Eastfield Elementary dressed up as their favorite characters from children’s literature in celebration of National Children’s Book Week. Students came to school in a wide variety of costumes ranging from characters in Dr. Seuss books to animals.
