Twenty-six years ago this week, Debbie Johnson’s afterschool class at the Early Childhood Enrichment Center took advantage of the beautiful spring day to enjoy the outdoors. The ages of the children ranged from kindergarten to fifth grade. The picture was taken in the yard of the First United Methodist Church of Marion.

Twenty-six years ago this week, Old Fort Elementary School Principal Pat Faulkner looked down from the roof as students started to gather for her descent. Faulkner agreed to spend the day on the roof of the school if students read 5,000 books. She fulfilled her part of the deal she made with the students.

Twenty-six years ago this week, students from West Marion Elementary School displayed artifacts from the school’s science museum as part of the Earth Day celebration. The display at Lake James State Park included sand dollars, star fish and fossils. Students Jessica Reel (left) and Larissa Miller explained fossils to the Haber family of Hickory.

Twenty-six years ago this week, McDowell Hospital’s new rural outpatient clinic was scheduled to open on June 1. The clinic would offer patient services to those who had no family physician and relied on the emergency room for health care.

Twenty-six years ago this week, the McDowell Scout Show took place and Pack 854 built this space derby that used rubber bands wound tightly to power the propellers that shoot the rockets. Here, Scouts Samuel Kasten (left) and Ross Brendle of Troop 210 tried it out.

During the week of April 16, 1997, Titan senior golfer Eric Miller blasted his way out of a sand trap during the Northwestern 4A Conference match in Morganton. McDowell won the match by four strokes over East Burke and increased their overall lead to 15 strokes over second-place Crest. The first-place Titans traveled to Alexander Central for their next NW4A match.

During the week of April 16, 1997, this was the McDowell Mavericks 12 and under AAU basketball team. They had played in the first round of the AAU tournament in Raleigh earlier that month. The members of the team were (front row, left to right) Andrew Faw, Colby Davis, Ryan Jennings, Jake Williams (back row) Wayne McLaughlin, Matthew Elliott, Kenny Presnell, Charles Young and Josh Addison. Not pictured were coaches Steve Jennings and Ken Presnell. The Mavericks did not win enough games to advance to the finals, but placed third in their division.

During the week of April 16, 1997, McDowell High’s Aletha Corpening (left) and Travis Morgan (right) were named the Rotary Club of Marion’s Athletes of the Week. Rotarian Lynn Steppe (center) presented the athletes with their awards. Corpening was a sophomore member of the Lady Titan track team and Morgan was a senior member of the Titan track team.

During the week of April 16, 1997, Foothills Community Theatre presented the musical comedy of “Nunsense” at the Greenlee Theatre at MACA. In this photo, Sabra Rock (center) played the part of Sister Regina.

During the week of April 16, 1997, a Lady Titan player took a walk after ball four in a softball game. McDowell whipped non-conference rival Mitchell 14-9 and returned to league play against East Burke.

During the week of April 16, 1997, Smith Peeler III of Peelers stood with the large promotional cow being used to advertise for Peelers Farm Fresh Milk. The cow was on display at M&M Supermarket on the five lane.

During the week of April 16, 1997, McDowell sophomore Scott Cunningham prepared for a return during a tennis match. The Titan tennis team traveled to Northwestern 4A Conference to face East Burke and then returned home to face Freedom.

During the week of April 16, 1997, West Marion Elementary students (from left) Adam Hartis, Emily Whittington, Megan Worley and Jordan Byrd, kids in Rosie Bradley’s class, tried to see if they could jump rope in sync. The sunshine and warm spring temperatures that week made recess more fun for kids in McDowell County.
