Thirty-three years ago this week, The McDowell News ran this color photograph of 3-year-old Adam Crisp as he prepared for All Hallows Eve by trying out his best Halloween face among the pumpkins at P&R Produce. Adam and his big sister Stephanie, 5, selected just the right pumpkin for their parents Doug and Rhonda Crisp to carve before the little ghosts and goblins go trick-or-treating. In 1992, color photographs in The McDowell News were very rare as the printing processes were still being perfected.
McDowell’s DeWayne Ledford tackles an East Burke player from behind during a 30-0 win for the Titans. Ledford and the rest of the defensive line for McDowell High controlled the line of scrimmage all night as the Titans wrapped up the Northwestern 4A crown and an undefeated season (8-0-1).
Charles Wilson, 72, of Jacktown Road proudly shows off one of the guitars he built. This one has an intricate carving of Jesus. He also enjoyed repairing guitars, fiddles and mandolins.
The McDowell County Chamber of Commerce produced this and two other postcards promoting the fact that the movie “The Last of the Mohicans” had been filmed on the shores of Lake James and other nearby locations in McDowell and western North Carolina. The movie, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, had just been released in theaters that fall.
Nick MacKinnon (right) of the Marion Sting sends a shot through two P.G. Sting defenders for a goal that turned out to be the deciding points in a 2-1 Marion victory over P.G. at the Maple Leaf Sports Complex. Marion won the Biddy Division regular season title with a perfect 12-0 mark.
During the week of Oct. 28, 1992, N.C. Rep. Bob Hunter (left) received the Outstanding Public Official Award from the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials. McDowell Recreation Director Wayne Tucci (right) nominated Hunter and presented him with the award.
N.C. Forest Service Ranger Jim Tanner scans the woodlands of several counties from the top of Huntsville Fire Tower in the Glenwood area of southern McDowell County. Tanner, who had manned the fire tower for three years, said he loved the work and the view which allowed him to see portions of South Carolina.
The McDowell County United Way nearly doubled its total in a week and neared the 50 percent mark, thanks to the in-house campaign by Baxter Healthcare. At the United Way meeting were Industry Division volunteer Randy Jacoby, a Baxter employee (left) and United Way President John McEntire.
The Old Fort Senior Citizen Park was dedicated for public use. The park came complete with picnic tables, benches, a professional horseshoe pit, two shuffleboard courts and a croquet yard. The property was leased from the town and the money for the park was raised through bake sales and donations.
The McDowell News published a series of photos showing off the new cars for 1993 that were arriving at local dealerships. This one shows the brand new 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with standard anti-lock brakes. It could be bought at East Court Motor Co.
West Marion resident Quinn Thomas speaks his mind during a meeting of the West Marion community at Addie’s Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Harvey Johnson and the Rev. Luther Gamble asked Marion officials to attend the meeting where community residents talked about the problem of young people loitering in the streets.
