During the week of Nov. 27, 1998, this was the 1998-99 McDowell Titans varsity basketball team. They were (front row, left to right) head coach Lloyd Church, assistant coach Joe Cash, Joey Deegeling, Zack McCartha, Tim Washburn, assistant coach Alex Smith, assistant coach Brian Franklin. In the back row, from left, were Tyron Rutherford, Seth Koon, Shaun Moore, Jeff Conley, Wesley Webb, Mikie Farmer, Weston McKinney and Jeremy Kuykendall. McDowell hosted Mitchell that week.

Twenty-four years ago this week, Sandra Epperson, playing Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Sam Paul Combs, playing King Henry II, perform a scene from the play “The Lion in Winter.” The Foothills Community Theatre production about sparring English monarchs was scheduled to be presented in early December 1998 at the theater on Main Street in Marion.

Twenty-four years ago this week, young singers and dancers from the Cherokee Reservation visited Marion and demonstrated some authentic footwork. Little Hawk (pictured) presented a hoop dance.

Twenty-four years ago this week, students in Joyce Poplin’s class at Nebo Elementary School treated their grandparents, great-grandparents and other visitors to some soup. Each child brought in a different ingredient for the soup. After eating, they entertained their guests with singing. Theodore Browning, 94, (right front) was one of the seven great-grandparents in attendance.

Twenty-four years ago this week, Sarah Mace, a first-grader at Marion Elementary School, is surrounded by the Thanksgiving turkeys her class made from paper bags and construction paper. They were lining the hallway that week.

Twenty-four years ago this week, McDowell County teachers Donna Gardner and Gail Bailey, both of Marion Elementary, and Joyce Poplin of Nebo Elementary earned the prestigious National Board for Certification. Only 924 teachers nationwide passed the criteria for certification that year.

During the week of Nov. 27, 1998, McDowell Lady Titan senior wing Kaysie Silver soared to the basket for two points during a game with Avery. The Titans and Lady Titans were scheduled to open their season at home with a game against Mitchell.

During the week of Nov. 27, 1998, teacher Maria Bristol’s kindergarteners at Nebo Elementary had a Thanksgiving dinner at school. Kids wore special headbands for the occasion. The number of feathers they got depended on their good behavior. Those with the most feathers got to sit at a special table.

During the week of Nov. 27, 1998, first-grade students at Marion Elementary brought in a wrapped shoebox filled with gifts. In this picture are (from left) Bi Hang, Jessica Hooper, Erica Foreman, Ricky Wiser and Quantavia Farley.

Twenty-four years ago this week, Marion police officers, McDowell County Sheriff’s deputies and troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol joined forces to stop drunk drivers and other law violators traveling in and through McDowell County. The Booze It & Lose It campaign continued through Dec. 5, 1998. During that time, law enforcement officers stepped up their patrols and conducted checkpoints around McDowell. Here, Marion police officers stopped motorists at a license checkpoint at the corner of Oak Street and Highland Drive.
