During the week of Dec. 30, 2003, Fulenwider Enterprises, the company that owned the Colonel’s Pantry on N.C. 226 in Marion, named the 71-year-old Thelma Bruner as the 2003 Employee of the Year. She started working at the Colonel’s Pantry on Rutherford Road in 1986 before working at the store on N.C. 226. Between customers, she delivered her maxims on living. “If you’re gonna live the right life, you’re gonna try to do some little something for somebody every day … and you don’t tell nobody. That’s your blessing. If you tell, you take away the blessing,” she said.
Twenty-two years ago this week, Lady Titans point guard Anna Atkinson drove to the basket during McDowell’s 81-40 win over North Mecklenburg. Atkinson had 21 points, 12 steals and 10 assists in the game.
McDowell High 160-pounder Jacob Jimeson gained the advantage on his opponent from Mitchell High during the Titan’s home quad-meet. McDowell went 3-0 on the day and was then 10-0 on the season.
The Killough family announced plans for the reopening of the old House Theater building. They planned to reopen it as “The House of the Risen Son,” a Christian outreach center where people can get together for fun and fellowship. At the announcement were (from left) family members Shirley Killough, her husband Reggie Killough, son Zak and daughter Stephanie.
Cattle farmers, grocery store operators and restaurant managers across the nation were all taking precautions because of mad cow disease. In this early McDowell News color photo, Mario DeLuca, the local Cooperative Extension agent for livestock, feeds his Gelbvieh cows cotton seed and corn, eliminating any possibility of mad cow disease.
McDowell’s Malcolm Kincaid went up for two points while Crest’s Dion Malachi (30) and Jamion Holland (54) defend during the Titans’ 82-72 come-from-behind victory over the Chargers in the Freedom Christmas Invitational.
Jackie, a 2-year-old Jack Russell terrier, knew he had it made. His owner Steve Clark took Jackie with him to work and everywhere he went, usually letting him ride on his lap. When cold weather set in, Clark noticed Jackie was getting cold and shivering. He knew he’d have to come up with a solution if he was going to keep the dog as a traveling companion. Clark invested in a vented cart and put some blankets in it so Jackie could continue his journeys in style.
