Thirty-seven years ago this week, these were some of the competitors at the McDowell 1988 Special Olympics held at East McDowell Junior High School. Seventy participants from all over McDowell competed in eight events. The Special Olympics was sponsored by the Junior Civitan Club.
Sue Noyes shows her 4-year-old daughter Marie the names of all the women who were served by Family Services during a ceremony honoring National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. There were approximately 700 names on the display, which was placed at the McDowell County Courthouse.
McDowell Special Olympics spectators and competitors cheer on participants in the broad jump category, one of eight events in the competition. The games, sponsored by the Junior Civitan Club, were held at East McDowell Junior High School. Sponsors included Coca-Cola Co. and McDonald’s. During these Olympics, everyone came home a winner.
During the week of Sept. 23, 1988, McDowell High School senior Lucy Burgin was crowned homecoming queen during the halftime ceremonies at McDowell-Watauga football game at Titan Stadium. She was one of six senior attendants.
John Holda, director of the Cardiopulmonary Department at The McDowell Hospital, celebrated breaking the cigarette habit for the previous 16 months. At the time, he preached his quit smoking message in a program sponsored by the hospital.
McDowell High’s Kevin Anderson gets off a solid kick in a soccer match. The Titans, 2-8 overall, faced Freedom in a Northwestern 4A matchup in Morganton that week.
Tommy Fuller (left) of Fuller’s Jewelry in the Marion City Square shopping center presented employee Judy Biggerstaff with a solid gold bracelet commemorating her 20 years of service with the store. She celebrated her 20th year that week and Fuller had been in the business for 32 years.
McDowell High’s No. 1 seed Kelly Brooks hits a forehand shot during the straight set victory over Watauga’s Kristen Horner. Brooks took a 6-2, 6-4 win representing the sole McDowell victory in an 8-1 setback.
Patriot Chad Koone crossed the goal line for a touchdown during Youth Football action on Saturday night at East McDowell Junior High. The Patriots rolled to a 28-0 victory over the Bears.
North Cove and Glenwood Biddy Division (ages 6-8) soccer players cluster around the ball during the first week of youth soccer action. Games were scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of that week.
