Forty-six years ago this week, 69-year-old Sandy Hudson Jr. sat inside his homemade airplane, which was powered by two 10-horsepowered lawnmower engines. He was the sole designer and builder of this plane, which he flew at Shiflet Field in Marion. Hudson invested $2,000 into his airplane project. “I wanted in my old age to go ahead and build my own plane,” he said to The McDowell News.

Intramural sports were an important part of the physical education program at East McDowell Junior High School. The flag football championships were recently completed and some of the winners were included in this photo. Coach Jerry Hicks’ eighth-grade title was won by this group who call themselves Henry’s Hilltoppers. During the week of Nov. 11, 1979, at least 300 people attended the reception for Dr. Ronald H. Seifred, the new superintendent for McDowell County Schools. At the reception for the new superintendent were members of the McDowell County Board of Education. They were (from left to right) Donald Anderson, Jim Peppers, Cecil Swepson, Seifred, Joyce McCall (School Board chairwoman), Scotty Willis, Bill Barnette and Joe Kaylor. Board members Rom English and Bill Howle were not available for photo.
McDowell High’s Richard Logan burst into the end zone in a game against South Caldwell. Logan gained 182 yards and gave the Titans their only two touchdowns. South Caldwell scored a 20-12 win over McDowell in a home game.
Richard Faulker (left), a member of the McDowell County Recreation Commission, accepted a check from Ed Palmer, plant manager of Air Preheater, which would cover the entire cost of a pool table for the Marimont Room at the Recreation Center.

These were the movies playing at the McDowell Twin Cinemas.
McDowell County Sheriff Bob R. Haynes (left) and officers Ken Hollifield, Eugene Grindstaff, Robert Smith, David Hogan and Gene Patrick are shown with the beer and liquor confiscated in a raid at the Skyline Hotel, located in the northern part of the county. The owner and operator of the hotel was charged with possession of liquor for sale.
