Thirty-six years ago this week, sophomore Lady Titan Christen Hollifield (No. 22) dribbles past South Caldwell’s Jennifer Hamby and Lisa Woods on her way to the basket as McDowell’s Nessy Brewer and Jill Suddreth watch. The Lady Titans became the first girls team ever at the school to win 20 regular season games.

During the week of Feb. 17, 1990, Gov. Jim Martin (right) presented a statewide award to Pleasant Gardens Elementary Principal Jerry McNeely (center) during North Carolina’s Take Pride in America Awards banquet in Raleigh. McNeely traveled with teachers from Pleasant Gardens to accept the award which was presented to the school for developing curriculum promoting conservation, litter awareness and respect for the environment.

A locally formed American company and a Swedish firm named INVENT announced plans to build Blue Ridge Country Club in North Cove, a golfing community with about 300 single-family homes and 100 townhouses. The proposed $15 million golf course would be designed by golfing great Lee Trevino and his organization. Pictured are those people who were playing an important role in this new and exciting venture in McDowell County. During the week of Feb. 17, 1990, these women were crowned champions in the Battle of the Sexes bowling tournament at Maple Leaf Lanes in Marion. Members of the final women’s team were (kneeling) Nancy Anderson and (second row) Pat Vess, Doris Wyatt and (third row) Ruth Crisp, Bobbie Laws and Gloria Shaw.

Thirty-six years ago this week, Titan star quarterback Jason Van Dyke signed a letter of intent to play football at Furman University as his parents Mary and Jerry Van Dyke look on. “It’s a good opportunity for me to go to Furman,” said Van Dyke on his athletic scholarship. “They really stress athletics and academics, something I was looking for in school. It’s a good school and I’m glad to be going.

Titan football star Albert Twitty signed a letter of intent to play football at N.C. A&T University. His brother William (standing, left), Coach Johnny Anderson, Principal Gary Laney and his father William (seated) look on as he signs. Twitty was being recruited by N.C. A&T as a tight end “but Albert can play on either side of the ball,” said Anderson.

Dr. Michael Whisenant traded in his stethoscope for a handcrafted dulcimer at Pleasant Gardens Elementary. He played traditional mountain music for the school’s faculty and students in grades two through six. When he was not making music, Whisenant was busy at his McDowell Internal Medicine practice.
