Thirty-four years ago this week, Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1988, was designated as “Annie Lee Epley Day” in Marion by Asheville Federal Savings and Loan. The community was invited to an open house at the association’s McDowell office on North Main Street. Epley, center, and the association’s new city executive, Vikki Bailey, who would assume Epley’s duties, greeted Mayor Everette Clark during the day’s reception.

Republican candidate for Congress Charles Taylor of Brevard got a handshake after his speech to the Marion Rotary Club. Gordon Morris shook hands with the former state legislator who hoped to win the seat then occupied by Democrat U.S. Rep. James McClure Clarke of Fairview.

Anne Hollifield, left, secretary and treasurer of the McDowell Dread Disease Association and Stirling Bower, chairman of the organization, review applications from local residents requesting assistance. McDowell Dread Disease donated up to $500 to individuals or families struck with a debilitating or crippling disease. Both Mrs. Hollifield and Bower had been with the United Way-funded organization for more than 25 years.

Paul and Virginia Lingerfelt held the Region Eight High School Sports Media plaque honoring former McDowell News editor Robert Lingerfelt, who was killed in a tragic auto accident on July 29, 1987. Lingerfelt was voted the region’s top award for his work that was dedicated to serving and promoting high school athletics.

During the week of Sept. 25, 1988, McDowell quarterback Jason Van Dyke (5) handed off to tailback Melvin Smith behind the Titan offensive line. The McDowell offensive line had so far been an instrumental part of McDowell’s success that season. The line included, from left to right, tight end Albert Twitty, tackle Curtis Kazee, guard Glenn Banner, center Jeremy Laney, guard Phillip Dillingham and tackle Bryan Johnson. Unavailable for photo were regular starting center Patrick Dillingham, who was out with a dislocated shoulder.

McDowell senior Carol Horn reached far to get the ball during her number three singles match victory at McDowell High. Horn defeated East Burke’s Emily Pitts, 6-3, 6-4 in the Lady Titans 5-4 team victory.

Two McDowell County paramedics treated a “victim” at a simulated airline crash on Mackey’s Creek Road. Personnel from every emergency agency in the county participated in the exercise, which was designed to identify strengths and weaknesses in local emergency response. Victims were actually youth from Greenlee Baptist Church made up to look like injured passengers.

The first annual McDowell Recreation/Fox Distributors golf champions were crowned at the Marion Lake Club. The two-some of J.J. Laughridge (second from left) and Fred Coats (third from left) captured the Gross championship while the team of Doug Helms (left) and Earl Helms (right) claimed the Net championship.

Foothills Community Theatre was hard at work rehearsing the musical review “Young Country,” which would be presented during the first week of October at East McDowell Junior High School auditorium. In this photo, Jason Daniels performed to music by the Loose Ends Band.
