Nineteen years ago this week, McDowell High junior Isaiah Shirlen, member of the YMCA of WNC Corpening Memorial Junior Olympic team, had qualified to participate in the National Junior Olympic Track and Field competition in Eugene, Ore. He was the first junior Olympian from McDowell County to qualify for nationals. Shirlen qualified by winning several meets. He won the 3000m and the 1500m in a state qualifier held at UNCA. He was scheduled to compete in the nationals in Oregon on July 31, 2004. The son of Vaughn and Linda Shirlen of Pleasant Gardens, Isaiah was a member of the cross country, indoor track and outdoors track teams at McDowell High School.

Six-month-old Michael Tapaie enjoyed floating in the swimming area of Lake James State Park while his mother, Cristina Padreca of Hickory, gave a supporting hand and encouraging words.

Emergency workers placed 5-year-old Vincent Harriman of Macedonia Church Road in a waiting helicopter for transport to Mission Hospital in Asheville. The youngster had been bitten by a snake. His mother Carmen said he was doing fairly well at Mission Hospital. The Vein Mountain area has a reputation with many local people as a snaky part of the county.

Four-year-old Michael Whitson of Nebo caught this 3-pound smallmouth bass. When asked where he caught it, he said “Right in the mouth!” Michael was the son of Michael and Michelle Whitson.

During the week of July 15, 2004, McDowell News Publisher David Setzer, right, presented March of Dimes Division Director Barry Burleson with $832.50, which was part of the proceeds from the popular Cutest Baby in McDowell Contest. Setzer said he hoped the money would help fight birth defects. Hunter Lauren Wiseman was the Cutest Baby contest winner, receiving 363 of the 5,567 votes.

During the week of July 15, 2004, in this season’s home and away stand against neighboring Forest City, the McDowell Mariners boys averaged 12 points each, took home 13 first-place ribbons and outscored their female swim team counterparts for the first time in recent memory. In this photo, Willie Wilkerson with the McDowell Mariners was on his way to scoring the highest points for boys against the Forest City Stingrays.
