During the week of Dec. 23, 1978, about 475 children of Cross Cotton Mill employees attended a Christmas party at the McDowell Arts and Crafts center on Tate Street. Children who gathered for the party got gifts from Santa Claus and were entertained by Mr. Bill Norwood of WLOS in Asheville and Kelly the Clown. Sonya and Aleshein Parker are shown here with Santa.

Forty-seven years ago this week, drama students at McDowell High presented the Christmas play “The Homecoming,” which was based on the book by Earl Hamner Jr. who created “The Waltons.” This play was directed by Kay Bartles. At the conclusion of the play, the audience joined in the singing of “Silent Night.”

During the week of Dec. 23, 1978, popular author John Parris, who wrote about life in the western North Carolina mountains, was scheduled to take part in a book-signing event at Johnson’s Book Center in downtown Marion. An autographed book by Parris no doubt made for a very nice Christmas gift that year.

During the week of Dec. 23, 1978, the McDowell High Chorale presented the Christmas opera “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” The opera was performed in the auditorium of McDowell Tech under the direction of Carol Robinson.

During the week of Dec. 23, 1978, the downtown merchant’s association had purchased Bradford pear trees and hemlock trees to be planted on Main Street to beautify the area. Also, Ginkgo trees were placed in several city parking lots for a more pleasing appearance. In this photo, city employees were working to get the trees planted.
