During the week of Nov. 18, 1981, McDowell High Principal Ted Freeman was given a farewell party by the students and faculty of the high school. Freeman was being promoted to assistant superintendent of McDowell County Schools. At the high school, he was presented with a registered beagle puppy named Fightin’ Titan and a shotgun and gun case during the farewell assembly. David Ricketts, the principal at East Junior High, would replace him as principal of McDowell High.

At the time, Ricketts was being promoted to principal of McDowell High. He would replace Ted Freeman, who was likewise being promoted to assistant superintendent.
Forty-four years ago this week, these were the members of the West McDowell Junior High varsity Lady Spartans for the 1981 basketball season. They were (front row, left to right) Karen Allison, Janet Taylor, Tina McKinney and Cindy Greer and (second row, left to right) Beverly Randolph, Rhonda Lyon, Michelle Barlowe and (third row, left to right) Beth Gardner, Melissa Williams and Dawn Walker. The Titans of McDowell High made their season debut by hosting West Caldwell in a pre-season scrimmage at MHS gym. The members of the 1981-82 Titans were (front row, left to right) trainer Robert Teuster, Ronie Garrett, Vincent Means, Craig Thomas, Neil Brackett, Marvin McKesson and manager Keith Butler and (back row, left to right) Head Coach Jack Ollis, Bryant McEntire, Scott Campbell, Joe Cash, Todd Poteat, Chris Twitty, Ronald Hausley and Darren Logan.

Aaron Abts, the manager for the new Columbia Carolina facility in the Greenlee community, pauses in the construction for the new plant. The company was authorized to spend up to $5.5 million in constructing and equipping of the facility by the local board, which issued Industrial Revenue Bonds, according to County Manager Jack Harmon. This new manufacturing plant would manufacture plywood and was scheduled to be in operation by August 1982.
Three sell-out audiences numbering almost 900 people enjoyed the performances of “An Evening with Gershwin” at McDowell Technical Community College. The show was a tribute to the music of legendary composer George Gershwin and the lyrics of his brother Ira Gershwin. It was directed by Maggie Lauterer with stage direction by Sandra Epperson. Carol Robinson was the musical director and Gene Messick was the technical director. Sponsored by the Hospital Auxiliary, the musical revue raised more than $2,000 for the new McDowell Hospital. Miss McDowell Tech was crowned at the annual fall banquet and dance at West McDowell Junior High. At far right, the 1980 queen Elizabeth Bean crowns the new Miss McDowell Tech Kathy McDaniel. The court included (left to right) Jackie Gibson and Lora Whisenant, who tied for third, and second runner-up Misty Massey and first runner-up Gaye Murphy.
Virginia Burnette of the Pilot Club of Marion modeled and showed off dust caps and sunbonnets she had made. The items were on sale at the Unique Shoppe on Main Street in Marion and would be on sale at other times in conjunction with the countywide Old Mountain Christmas celebration.
