Since 1995, the Orchard at Altapass has been a destination in western North Carolina. For the past 30 years, the apple orchard off the Blue Ridge Parkway near the McDowell-Mitchell county line offered apples, hayrides, storytelling, mountain music, mountain crafts, delicious fudge and good times.

For his work of preserving the Orchard, Bill Carson (left) was honored with the 2020 Esse Quam Videri Award from the state of North Carolina. Wit Tuttell, executive director of Visit NC, a unit of the Economic Development Partnership with North Carolina, presented the award to Carson.
