According to new research, Gen Z college graduates prioritize job stability over anything else. Statistics from the popular career website 'Handshake' have revealed a huge jump in searches for stable government jobs. Applications for jobs in government, law and politics grew by 84%, and applications for the energy sector grew by 53%. Interestingly, the sector which grew the least amount in terms of searches was tech, only growing by 8%. Companies like Chevron, Boeing, Bank of America and NASA all topped the list of searched terms on the site. It is unknown exactly why Gen Z is craving more stability than previous generations. However, Gen Z grew up in a time of great economic instability, examples being the 2008 recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. So, while the idealistic and tech-savvy generation is more suited to the tech industry in terms of skill. The potential big-money contracts are not worth the high risk of being let go or made redundant. Some of the world’s biggest tech companies such as Meta have been letting go of thousands of workers in the name of efficiency.
