NASA scientists using the Chandra X-ray Observatory have made a new discovery showing that the Milky Way's outer spiral arms extend significantly farther than previously mapped. The findings, published on July 8, suggest astronomers may need to revise current models of our galaxy's structure. Researchers say the discovery improves our understanding of the Milky Way's size and evolution, although it does not change Earth's location within the galaxy or alter known risks from asteroids and comets. The updated mapping provides new insight into how our galaxy formed and how its outer regions continue to evolve.
