A year after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at a college rally in Utah, his alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, is facing a capital murder trial. Robinson has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder charges in connection with Kirk’s killing on Sept. 10, 2025, and will return to court in the coming months as the case moves forward. The events that led to Kirk’s death began on Sept. 10, when the controversial conservative activist arrived at Utah Valley University for a scheduled rally. At the rally, Kirk was taking a question from an audience member about gun violence when he was suddenly shot in the neck and rushed to the hospital. Later that day, US President Donald Trump announced Kirk’s death in a post on social media, writing on Truth Social: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead.” The following day, on Sept. 11, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) launched a manhunt for a “person of interest” and released a series of photographs of the suspect. Authorities later released videos showing the alleged killer running across the roof of the campus building where police believe the shot was fired, before leaving the campus. After videos and photos of the suspect were released, Robinson’s mother identified her son and urged him to turn himself in to authorities. By Sept. 12, Robinson was in custody at Utah County Jail in connection with Kirk’s killing. Robinson is still in custody and has appeared at several hearings in the case. A five-day preliminary hearing began on July 6, 2026, in Provo, Utah, where prosecutors presented several key pieces of evidence against Robinson. The evidence presented included DNA that prosecutors claimed linked Robinson to the rifle believed to have been used in the killing. Surveillance footage of Robinson was also presented as evidence, as well as handwritten notes and text messages in which he allegedly admitted to the crime. One note, which was left under a keyboard in Robinson’s apartment, read: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it.” In text message exchanges with his former roommate, Robinson allegedly responded, “I am, I’m sorry,” when asked if he was Kirk’s shooter, adding that he had “had enough of his hatred.” Investigators also discovered unfired bullet cartridges in the rifle used to murder Kirk, inscribed with phrases including “Hey Fascist! Catch!” and other references that prosecutors pointed to as evidence of Robinson’s political motive. Following the preliminary hearing, Utah Judge Tony Graf ruled that Robinson will stand trial for Kirk’s murder, allowing the case to move toward a capital murder trial. The case is expected to continue over the coming months, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty for Robinson.
