Stephen Colbert reunited with Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver, and Seth Meyers on the latest episode of ‘The Late Show’ ahead of its finale on May 21. The late-night hosts previously teamed up during the 2023 writers’ strike for the ‘Strike Force Five’ podcast, raising money for their affected staff members. During the show, they also revealed that a new podcast episode will be released May 13 in support of the World Central Kitchen and its humanitarian and disaster relief meal programs. The TV legends discussed ‘The Late Show’ ending, late-night television’s future, and US President Donald Trump’s fixation with late-night. Colbert asked the group if they ever expected a president to care so deeply about their work. Kimmel replied, “We’re doing a job that his wife has strong feelings about.” Meyers joked, “Most of us have avoided that part.” Oliver then recalled when Kimmel shared “a picture of Melania mad at him” in their late-night group chat. Kimmel was referring to his recent feud with First Lady Melania Trump, which began after he joked on-air that she had a glow like an “expectant widow.” Meyers later made his case for late-night, joking that Trump posting on Truth Social during his broadcasts proves that “leaders of the free world are watching it when it airs.” CBS announced last July that it was cancelling ‘The Late Show’ for what the broadcaster claims are “purely financial” reasons.
