Sport and entertainment aren’t as far apart as they might seem. Both are about showing up, handling pressure, and knowing how to perform when people are watching. Here are some actors who got their start in sports… Take Dwayne Johnson. Before he became one of Hollywood’s biggest names, he was playing defensive line for the Miami Hurricanes, even winning a national championship in 1991. An injury kept him out of the NFL, but a stint in the Canadian Football League—and later his rise in WWE as The Rock—helped shape the work ethic and presence he’s known for now. Then there’s Arnold Schwarzenegger. Long before making movies, he was dominating bodybuilding, winning seven Mr Olympia titles and building the physique that made him instantly recognizable on screen. The obsessive focus it takes to compete at that level carried straight into his acting career, where he built another kind of legacy. Terry Crews looked set for a solid run in football, playing in the NFL throughout the ‘90s and even spending time in NFL Europe. It wasn’t a glamorous career, but that grind ended up preparing him for what came next, a move into acting, with roles in films like ‘Friday After Next’ and ‘The Expendables,’ before landing a fan-favorite spot on ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine.’ And even former US President Ronald Reagan started out in sports, playing college football and later working as a radio announcer. That job turned out to be the turning point. While traveling with a baseball team to California, he ended up doing a screen test that led to a studio contract, opening the door to a completely different career in Hollywood, and later politics.
With so much attention to upcoming elections and candidates, a long-ago memory nudged me and made me think about what I would really like to hear from anyone running for public office.
