Dolly Parton’s story goes far beyond the rhinestones, hit songs, and unmistakable voice that made her a country music legend. From growing up in poverty and overcoming heartbreaking personal struggles to building an extraordinary career and becoming one of the music world’s most generous philanthropists, Parton left an impact that reached far beyond the stage. In this video, we look back at the difficult moments, remarkable achievements, and unforgettable songs that helped define her extraordinary life and legacy. The country music star grew up in a one-room cabin in Tennessee as one of 12 children. Money was extremely tight, and her family often had to make do with very little. Those humble beginnings later inspired some of her most beloved songs, including ‘Coat of Many Colors’. She also experienced devastating loss at a young age. When Parton was nine, her baby brother Larry died just four days after he was born. Speaking to Fox News, Parton explained that, because there were so many children in the family, she helped care for him a lot, which meant that his passing came with “a lot of heartache.” As a child, Parton was seriously injured when she jumped over a fence and landed on a broken Mason jar, nearly severing three of her toes. With little money for medical care, her mother treated the injuries herself, using cornmeal and kerosene before sewing the toes back together with sewing needles. Reflecting on the experience during an appearance on ‘The Dr. Oz Show’, Parton later recalled that her foot thankfully fully healed. But Dolly’s struggles continued into adulthood. In 1984, Parton collapsed onstage after suffering serious health problems, including internal bleeding. Doctors diagnosed her with endometriosis, and she underwent a partial hysterectomy. The surgery saved her life, but it also meant that she could not have children. Speaking to The Mirror in 2014, she revealed that “depression runs in my family on both sides and I have to be wary.” During the podcast series ‘Dolly Parton’s America’, she later admitted that she had once contemplated suicide, but a moment involving her dog, Popeye, helped pull her back from the brink. She said, “God is dog spelled backwards, and I always thought that might have been the very thing.” Dolly Parton was more than just a country music superstar. She was also known for giving back to those in need. Throughout her decades-long career, Parton poured millions of dollars into supporting children, medical research, and communities in crisis. One of her most lasting achievements is the Imagination Library, which she launched in 1995 in honor of her father, who could not read. The program provides free books to children from birth through age five, helping encourage a love of reading before they start school. By 2025, it had impressively gifted more than 304 million books to children around the world. Parton also made major contributions to medical research. In 2020, she donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University to support COVID-19 research, helping fund early work connected to Moderna’s vaccine. Just two years later, she donated another $1 million to support pediatric infectious disease research. Her generosity was also felt after natural disasters. Following the devastating 2016 wildfires in East Tennessee, Parton created the My People Fund, giving families who lost their homes $1,000 a month for six months. The effort ultimately distributed around $8.9 million. Then, in 2024, Parton donated another $1 million of her own money toward Hurricane Helene relief in East Tennessee, while her businesses and the Dollywood Foundation contributed an additional $1 million. She also supported students through scholarships, helped fund a new hospital in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee, and even earned the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2022. For Parton, giving back was about more than simply writing checks. As she told Good Morning America in 2021, “I'm just so proud to have been a part of anything that's good and that's making life a little better for people.” Dolly Parton built a legendary career as a singer, songwriter, actor, and cultural icon, with a catalog of songs that have become some of country music’s most enduring classics. Here’s a look back at some of the tracks that defined Dolly Parton’s career... In 1973, Parton released ‘Jolene,’ which grew into one of her most famous songs and a defining staple of country music. Parton told NPR in 2008 that the song was inspired by a flirtatious bank teller who seemed interested in her husband, Carl Dean. The result was a desperate plea to another woman to leave her partner alone, delivered with Parton’s instantly recognizable vocal style. Parton found another major hit with ‘Here You Come Again,’ an unusual entry in her catalog because it was written by the songwriting duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
