On March 28, officials with McDowell Technical Community College, the McDowell County Board of Commissioners, the MTCC Board of Trustees and representatives of local agencies held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new “One-Stop Center” at the college. The ceremony was held on the second floor of the Cedar Building, also known as Building 11. Officials from the McDowell Chamber of Commerce and the college’s Foundation Board were also on hand for the event. Access to college services at McDowell Tech has been made easier with the opening of this much-anticipated “One-Stop Center” in the newly-renovated facilities at the Cedar Building. This new center brings together all of the services that are considered essential to a student’s success in one place, under one roof. Representatives from Student Services, Financial Aid, Student Success, Student Outreach and Engagement and others will be housed in this location for easy access and efficiency. Funding for renovation and construction of the One-Stop Center in space previously occupied by the college’s Student Services and the Business Offices was funded by a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Title III: Strengthening Institutions Program. Furnishings for the center were purchased from funds provided by the W. Harold Smith Foundation, a local nonprofit created with funds from the estate of the late Harold Smith, a local businessman who wanted to promote higher education among local youth.
