Held each year on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died in service to the US military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was first celebrated in the years following the American Civil War. In the late 1860s, many American towns started paying tribute to fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers. This tradition continues today, with many Americans observing the holiday by visiting cemeteries or taking part in parades. General John A. Logan was the first to call for a nationwide day of remembrance in 1868. Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971 and has been expanded to honor U.S. soldiers who have died in any war. In recent years it has become a tradition for people to use the three-day weekend to host parties or barbecues.
