On Tuesday, McDowell County officials and Duke Energy representatives took part in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new recreation park which will be next to the Black Bear Access Area on Lake James. This lakeside park will feature hiking trails, day-use picnic facilities, picnic shelters, 38 campsites, a bathhouse, restrooms and a fishing pier.
For several years, Duke Energy and McDowell County have talked about a proposal by the electric company to lease land around the Black Bear Access Area to the county for recreation purposes.
