Attend 9/11 remembrance ceremonies in Catawba, Burke, Iredell, McDowell counties
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed almost 3,000 in three states after four planes were hijacked.
Local ceremonies and events honoring the victims who died during the attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, are planned for the 25th anniversary.
McDowell County
McDowell County will host a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Friday at the McDowell County Emergency Services headquarters at 129 Barnes Road in Marion.
Burke County
The History Museum of Burke County will have a 9/11 installation exhibit throughout the month of September. The installation by Roberto Paganuzzi includes two illuminated clear plastic towers, a five-sided illuminated element and a red illuminated trench. The History Museum of Burke County is located at 201 W. Meeting St. in Morganton. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
The U.S. Army Asheville Recruiting Company will host a free 9/11 stair climb event at East Burke High School's football stadium on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 8 a.m. Participants will climb 110 flights of stairs. The high school is located at 3695 E. Burke Blvd. in Connelly Springs. There will also be donation collections for the Eric Cranford Foundation. U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Eric Cranford was a Drexel native who died at the Pentagon during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The Eric Cranford Foundation awards a scholarship each year to a graduating student in Burke County.
Catawba County
The city of Hickory will host a Patriots Day Remembrance Ceremony on Friday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Union Square in Hickory.
The city of Conover will have the city’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the Norman B. Coley Amphitheater located at 901 Second Ave. SE in Conover.
The town of Catawba will have a 9/11 ceremony at the First Responders Garden of Honor on Friday from 9-10 a.m. The garden is adjacent to the Catawba Town Hall at 102 First St. NW.
The Hickory Premier will have a tribute to first responders concert featuring local country musician Casey Clark on Friday at 8 p.m. First responders will get 50% off ticket prices by emailing caseyclarkmusic@gmail.com to get a promo code. Regular ticket prices are $25.93, including taxes and fees. The Hickory Premier is located at 109 11th St. NW in Hickory.
Iredell County
The town of Mooresville, the Exchange Club of Mooresville/Lake Norman and Richard’s Coffee Shop will have a 9/11 memorial ceremony on Friday. The event will begin around 8:45 a.m. with the Silent Remembrance Walk from Richard’s Coffee Shop to Liberty Park. The ceremony will continue at Liberty Park at 9 a.m. with music and reflections. Liberty Park is located at 255 E. Iredell Ave. in Mooresville.
