The Hubble Space Telescope is a NASA space telescope launched into orbit on April 24, 1990, aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. The telescope is named after American astronomer Edwin Hubble, considered one of the most important observational cosmologists of the 20th century. The Hubble telescope is in low Earth orbit and can observe near ultraviolet, visible and near infrared spectra with its 2.4 meter primary mirror. The Hubble telescope is excepted to de-orbit sometime between 2014-2021.
