Know an outstanding volunteer?
NC Governor's Service Award nomination period opens Nov. 2
Do you know of an outstanding volunteer or group of volunteers who help your organization by going above and beyond?
Here's your chance to nominate that volunteer or group for the N.C. Governor's Service Award.
The nomination period for this prestigious honor will start on Monday, Nov. 2, and last until Thursday, Jan. 28, 2027, according to a news release.
Jennifer Taylor-Ivy is the McDowell County volunteer coordinator. She said every year at this time she works to get organizations and businesses to nominate McDowell's best volunteers who have gone above and beyond.
"Each county is given 10 opportunities to nominate great volunteers, and I would love to find 10 here in McDowell County," she said.
To be eligible for this award, the volunteer needs to:
■ Be working activities for a minimum of a year in North Carolina. Any service outside of the state is not eligible.
■ Must not have received compensation for their service. This includes service done for school credit or for other forms of compensation.
■ Must not have been required to do their service. Nominees are ineligible if they are required to do their service through schools, courts or other authorities.
■ Must not nominate himself or herself. Self-nominations are not eligible.
■ Must not have been nominated by a family member.
In addition, groups must be nominated by someone outside the group, and previous award recipients from within the last 10 years are not eligible.
"The Governor's Volunteer Service Award honors the true spirit of volunteerism by recognizing individuals and groups that make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service," reads the website for the award. "An individual or group from the public, nonprofit, and private sectors may be nominated for this recognition award by a community member to their county-designated coordinator. There are categories for the type of nominee (individual, group, national service, and director of volunteers). Additional categories are based on the area of service (veteran, youth, seniors, education, animals, etc.). The Commission will review county nominations, and awards are given out locally by the designated county award coordinator."
