Law offcers train for safer schools in McDowell
FROM STAFF REPORTS
During the week of Oct. 19-23, deputies with the McDowell County Sheriff's Offce, in cooperation with McDowell County Schools, took part in a training exercise focusing on enhancing school safety and response to critical incidents.
During the exercise, school resource offcers from across the school district worked closely with the sheriff's offce SWAT operators on tactics, strategies and approaches for responding to critical incidents on school grounds. The school resource offcers (SROs), SWAT operators, patrol deputies and reserve deputies attended the training in eight different schools across McDowell County. In addition to refining tactics, this training provided valuable opportunities for deputies to learn school layouts in order to prepare for any future responses, according to a news release from the sheriff's offce.
"Protecting our students and school staff starts with preparation," said Sheriff Nathan Mace. "Operation Homebase gives our deputies the opportunity to train together, learn the layouts of our schools, and strengthen the coordination needed when every second counts. We appreciate our partnership with McDowell County Schools and their shared commitment to keeping our school communities safe."
McDowell County Schools Superintendent Tracy Grit said that training on days when there is no threat — often called "blue sky" training — is critical to the partnership between schools and law enforcement.
"We are forever grateful to the McDowell County Sheriff's Offce and Sheriff Mace for using a blue sky day at schools across our county to work alongside our principals and train for a day we all pray we never see in our schools," Grit said.
Grit said he was confident that "our friends in law enforcement, emergency services, and fire and rescue" will be there when needed, according to the news release.
"Thank you for partnering with our schools and helping us keep our kids safe," he added.
