After a breather on Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers got back to the practice field for another installment of training camp ahead of Saturday's Week 1 preseason game against Buffalo.
Here are the top takeaways and observations from training camp this week:
A big return
Starting left guard Damien Lewis returned to the practice field. He had not been able to suit up since July 28 due to a calf injury. Head coach Dave Canales talked about Lewis' work thus far. "D-Lew went through the first part of practice, individual work. Looked great," Canales told reporters. "Was able to move around some. We kept him out of team, got him some extra work on the side, and then that'll be his next progression."
Canales added that he does not expect Lewis to play in Saturday's preseason contest against the Buffalo Bills.
Brooks is back
Running back Jonathon Brooks, on the other hand, is expected to get some action this weekend. Canales confirmed that the thirdyear rusher will be ready to go at the new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.
"He's in great shape," Canales stated of Brooks. "He's ready to rock. He's ready to play football. So now, that's just the next part of it.
"He'll play with the first group. He'll mix in and out with Chuba [Hubbard], and we'll be able to get a good look at those guys with a couple of drives."
Brooks, since being selected in the second round of the 2024 draft, has been limited to just three games due to a pair of ACL tears.
Saturday should mark his first time back on an NFL playing field since Week 14 of his rookie campaign.
By the Horn
Canales also talked about second-year wideout Jimmy Horn Jr. on Wednesday. He touched on Horn's impressive showing in the Hall of Fame Game as well as his outlook to make the initial 53-man roster.
"Really, Jimmy made a great case," Canales stated. "I think we talked the week before — just opportunities. The ball just wasn't finding him in practice. But all of a sudden, you get in a game — he's still fast, he's still tough, he's still competitive. And all of a sudden, he's making these plays that we've been wanting to see him make.
"So, he really did a great job representing himself in that game and just getting a few more reps with the first group and second group during practices."
Horn reeled in four catches for a team-leading 44 receiving yards in last Thursday night's 33-30 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
NASCAR adds punch to All-Star race weekend
NORTH WILKESBORO SPEEDWAY | 2027
JUSTIN PELLETIER The Charlotte Observer
NASCAR's biggest in-season spectacle — with its largest single-athlete all-star payout of any North American sport — is returning to North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2027.
NASCAR is returning its all-star race to the rejuvenated North Carolina track next season after running it at Dover in 2026, the organization announced Wednesday. The all-star race was at North Wilkesboro from 2023-25, starting its previous run there on the heels of a massive renovation project that has revitalized the once-downtrodden .625-mile oval.
This time, NASCAR is upping the ante, bringing not only the all-star race, but also a Craftsman Truck Series race and an O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race, creating a triple-header weekend.
"Four years ago ... we announced what many believed was impossible — that NASCAR was returning to North Wilkesboro Speedway," NASCAR Chief Operating Officer Ben Kennedy said in a news release Wednesday. "Today, seeing this iconic venue host a historic NASCAR triple-header weekend is a testament to just how extraordinary that revival has been. North Wilkesboro has once again become a place where NASCAR's rich history, current momentum and exciting future come together."
It's going to be 'One Hot Night'
In another nostalgic twist, the 2027 all-star race will be run at night, under the lights, an intentional nod to the 35th anniversary of "One Hot Night," the first all-star race at night, in 1992.
"Thanks to Bruton Smith and Humpy Wheeler, 'One Hot Night' at Charlotte Motor Speedway was the first superspeedway NASCAR race under the lights, and that's when I truly became a race fan," Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith said in the release. "There was electricity in the air, and an entire generation of race fans was captivated by it. We've seen the same excitement amongst fans at North Wilkesboro every day and night we've been on track since re-opening. It's a pilgrimage every NASCAR fan should take, and now we have the biggest race week ever to look forward to for 2027."
NASCAR's 2027 all-star race in North Wilkesboro
The all-star race will run the week before Charlotte Motor Speedway's signature Memorial Day Coke 600, on Sunday, March 23. On the preceding Friday, the NASCAR's truck series will kick off the weekend, and on Saturday, the O'Reilly series — NASCAR's second-tier circuit — will make its first appearance at the track since 1985.
Last year, NASCAR moved the all-star race to Dover, while North Wilkesboro hosted a points race for the first time in 30 years.
The 2027 season will also mark the 80th anniversary of the first race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, which hosted its first race on May 18, 1947, on what was then a dirt oval.
Two years later, North Wilkesboro hosted the finale of NASCAR's first strictly stock season. That series evolved into what we know today as the NASCAR Cup Series.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Former UNC basketball guard Seth Trimble says he had "the best four years that anybody could ask for" with the Tar Heels, but he plans on using a fifth year of eligibility to play at Louisville.
First reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel in the early-morning hours of Wednesday, Aug. 12, Trimble is set to suit up for the Cardinals following a Colorado district court ruling that granted the 2022 class an additional year of eligibility. The NCAA is appealing the decision.
"Carolina, I've had the best four years that anybody could ask for. Through thick and thin, I gave my absolute all and represented this university and that jersey every single day because this place means the world to me," Trimble wrote in an Instagram post. "And l'll continue to represent this university for the rest of my life. I've been considering returning to college the whole summer now, and Carolina was always in the running, but with a full roster at UNC, and other circumstances, I won't be able to return home and will be transferring."
As Trimble alluded to in his social media post, the Tar Heels have presumably filled out their roster and allocated their NIL resources to other players on the perimeter ahead of Michael Malone's debut season in Chapel Hill.
That new-look guard group is headlined by Utah transfer Terrence Brown Jr., Virginia Tech transfer Neoklis Avdalas and N.C. State transfer Matt Able. Jaydon Young and Isaiah Denis are returners for the Tar Heels.
After averaging 14 points and 3.8 rebounds and 3 assists in his final season at UNC, Trimble entered the transfer portal on April 20 to open up the possibility to play a fifth year of college basketball. He also owns a Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream shop on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.
He then spent the NBA Summer League with the Washington Wizards, averaging 10.8 points and 4 rebounds across five games in Las Vegas. UNC is scheduled to face Louisville twice in the 202627 season as part of the 18-game ACC schedule.
"Know that the love I have for this place is irreplaceable," Trimble said. "I will forever come back home and honor this place like I've done and like the ones before me do, I love you Carolina."
