MATCH and West Marion Inc. will host the fifth annual Backto-School Bash on Thursday, Aug. 20.
The event will take place from 4-6 p.m. at 201 Ridley St. in Marion, according to a news release from organizers.
The free event aims to help McDowell County students and families begin the new school year feeling prepared, supported and connected. Children will receive free backpacks filled with school supplies while supplies last. The event will also feature gift certificates to Shoe Sensation, a hot dog cookout, games, giveaways and opportunities to meet local organizations that serve children and families.
"Our Back-to-School Bash is about more than handing out school supplies," said Amy Stevens, program director of MATCH. "It is about bringing our community together to make sure local children feel supported and families know where to turn when they need help. Starting school with the right supplies can build confidence, reduce stress for parents, and help students feel ready to learn."
More than 30 community organizations and service providers are expected to participate, offering information about healthcare, behavioral health, transportation, education, employment, food assistance, family support and other community resources.
Participating organizations include McDowell County Department of Social Services, McDowell Transit, McDowell Technical Community College, McDowell County Public Library, NC Works McDowell, Centro Unido Latino Americano, Mission Ministries Alliance, RHA Health Services, WNCCHS, McLeod Centers for Wellbeing, McDowell County Head Start, McDowell 4-H, YMCA of Western North Carolina and many others, according to the news release.
Information and assistance will be available in both English and Spanish. All local families are welcome.
Community members who would like to support the event may still donate school supplies or contribute financially. Donations help ensure that resources purchased for the event remain in McDowell County and directly benefit local students.
