What does America mean to you?
NC 4th graders respond
As the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approaches, we asked students two questions: What does America mean to you? What will America look like in 50 years?
Fourth grade students at Sherrills Ford Elementary School answered.

What the U.S.A. means to me
Freedom
The U.S.A means to me a home and a great community. It also means freedom with no segregation and it means hope, love, joy, and peace. It means a great family and friends who also have freedom. It means country, beautiful sights and a wonderful place to be.
Military and Army
The military helps us and they also fight for us. They are so helpful in a way just like the Army, they help us a lot too! In war the Army risks their lives for us. The military and the Army helps us in many ways. Thank you to all who have served in the military and Army!
Democracy and Government
It means Democracy and how many times it happens. Some people are mad but it happens. The government helps us with laws to keep us safe and secure. To keep us in order all well, this makes our country well ordered.
The three branches of government
The Executive branch can reject laws and it can appoint supreme court judges.
The Legislative Branch can reject the president’s ruling, limit spending money, they can also remove the president!
The Judicial branch can throw out laws that are unconstitutional the Supreme Court leads this. It is in charge of all the courts.

What America means to me
America is a great country, full of a lot of great things. But the way to understand what an amazing place this nation is, you need the opinions of others. And I’m here to give mine.
For starters, we are always looking to improve ourselves. From soccer to knitting, we have many options to realize our full potential and possible greatness. If you want to be a volleyball player, join an open team and do it! If you want to be a doctor, all you have to do is attend medical school and BAM! Once you pass your test, you’re a doctor. Speaking of which, we have better medical care than other countries. Other places may rush you to an emergency room without any explanation about what’s happening, meanwhile we take our time in explaining what the issue is and, if necessary, take examinations and then give the correct treatment.
I also believe that America has great leaders who inspire people. For girls, perhaps they idolize Dolly Parton, or boys may dream of meeting Bobby Witt Jr. Looking up to people makes you want to do great things, and great things lead to a great America.
America also reminds me of freedom and courage. We fought for independence, unlike every nation, and many patriots perished fighting for what’s right. That takes courage! Thanks to the revolution, many people will remember America’s bravery and powerful will when they think of us. And it shows that having a strong motive can beat any strong army, if you try.
As you see, we are a great country, and it will always be that way, from 1776 to who knows when. I hope forever, because our nation means a lot to me.

What America means to me
AMERICA means freedom to me and I’ll tell you what I mean by that. It is the country that is one of all countries that lets you do what YOU want to do. No one else can tell you stuff like you will not show your hair or you can’t vote. Stuff like that so when I say freedom I mean in AMERICA you can be an astronaut or vote or dye your hair or show your hair even you can even see people who aren’t your skin color and maybe have your dream job. We can even practice our own religion.
We can be our own self
I know a lot of stuff about America and that’s because my siblings are in the Air Force and Marines. When I grow up, I’d like to serve this country by going in the Air Force, but they also CHOOSE to serve this country and if I was guaranteed to, I would say yes, but I can choose to serve my country. I am not made. I get to choose and that’s another thing about freedom: the word choose means you decide if YOU want to do something. Me and my siblings are able to decide if we want to do this.
Another thing is that America is one of the best countries because of its freedom and it is so cool because of its freedom too. I can have basically anything I want for an instant topic is jobs such as an astronaut, builder, pilot, teachers, nurses, marine biologists and mechanical engineers, really anything. You can have a job you pick and love and that’s why I think America is the best. You can speak freely. America is actually one whole nation under God and nation means together a team.

What does America mean to you?
The land of endless opportunity
To me, America represents a landscape of boundless potential where your starting point doesn’t have to define your finish line. It is a place built on the idea that through hard work, determination, and a bit of grit, anyone can carve out their own version of success. This “American Dream” isn’t just about wealth; it’s about the freedom to choose your own path, pursue your specific passions, and build a life that reflects your individual values. Whether it’s starting a small business or being the first in a family to go to college, America provides the stage for these personal triumphs to happen every day.
A Tapestry of Diversity
America also means a “melting pot” of cultures, ideas, and traditions that create something entirely unique. What makes the country strong is that it isn’t just one thing; it is a collection of stories from all over the world. Walking down a single city street, you can hear different languages, smell diverse cuisines, and see how people from vastly different backgrounds contribute to a shared community. This diversity is our greatest strength because it fosters innovation and pushes us to see the world through someone else’s eyes, constantly redefining what it means to be American.
The Responsibility of Freedom
Finally, America means the privilege and responsibility of living in a democracy. Having a voice in how we are governed — through voting, free speech, and the right to protest — is a powerful gift that many people around the world still fight for. To me, being American means not just enjoying these freedoms, but also working to make the country better for the next generation. It is an ongoing project of “forming a more perfect union,” where we acknowledge our flaws and strive toward a future that ensures liberty and justice for everyone, regardless of who they are.

What America means to me
To me, America represents more than just a nation: it is a living promise that every individual has the power to shape their own destiny! As a 4th grader, I view our country as a vast landscape of opportunity where hard work and big ideas are the keys to the future. It is a place where history meets tomorrow, and I am honored to be part of that incredible journey!
The true heartbeat of America is found in our shared freedom! This liberty allows us to explore our passions, express our unique perspectives, and pursue excellence in everything we do. Whether we are studying in a classroom or volunteering in our local communities, we are practicing the rights that make this nation extraordinary! This sense of freedom isn’t just a rule, it is a brilliant invitation to lead and innovate.
Furthermore, America is defined by its incredible unity. We are a brilliant mosaic of different backgrounds, yet we are bound together by the same stars and stripes. This diversity is our greatest strength, proving that when we col-laborate, we can solve any challenge. Every citizen contributes a vital chapter to our national story, making it richer and more vibrant with every passing year.
Ultimately, America is an explosion of hope! It is the daring belief that no mountain is too high to climb and no dream is bold to chase. To be an American is to be a fearless builder of the future, fueled by unstopped courage and a fire for greatness. I am proud to grow up in a land where the possibilities are truly electric and limitless!

What will America be in 2076?
Autopilot cars will be discontinued due to it not being safe and many crashes happening. The main reason why I think this will happen is because I feel like an AI driving for you is very dangerous and it could stop at any minute, which is not safe for anyone.
AI will take over many jobs, making people unable to get money, and many people will use AI for simple tasks because today, lots of people use ChatGPT for homework, simple questions, and more things people could do themselves.
Many animals will go extinct, for example like polar bears, elephants, and maybe even whales because lots of animals are used for food and like for example, elephant tusks are taken away from the elephant and used for jewelry, which could kill them.
People will start studying more about aliens and might realize that aliens might be real because lots of people have reported seeing things floating in the sky looking like UFOs.
Scientists will revive extinct animals like the Sabertooth Tiger, Dodo Bird, and Woolly Mammoth because scientists have revived the dire wolf, so maybe they can revive more.
Lots of new trends will start like bringing back skinny jeans, and maybe fur coats because lots of models have been wearing a lot of things many people don’t wear anymore.
Robot animals will be very popular, so instead of having a real life dog or cat, many people will instead have a robot animal because robot animals are becoming very popular and people like to see what robots can do.

What I think America will be in 2076
I think that America will have many new inventions. For example, people will use AI (Artificial Intelligence) more than they did back in 2026.
People will wear different clothing. People will not take care of the earth and there will be more pollution. Another planet will be able for people to breathe. I think this because people are already not taking care of the earth as much as they should be.
I think so many more things will happen like maybe they can make an invention that people can go deeper in the ocean than they did and maybe the extinct animals will not be extinct anymore and come back. I think this is because first, people can’t go to the ocean floor with a submarine because of pressure so I think by then it will be made. And the extinct animal part, I think that people will be able to bring back the extinct animals because scientists are already trying to bring back extinct animals.
Maybe new different types of televisions. There will be more sports. The sport rules will change. Maybe there will be a way to fully cure polio and other sicknesses. I think the sports one because I feel like there could be more sports for people to explore. And the sicknesses part well, polio just has a vaccine for people not to get it but I feel like scientists could fully stop polio and other sicknesses can stop too if the scientists that do that stuff can stop deadly sicknesses from coming.
Even more things I think will happen in 2076 new telephones, iPads, phones and schools. Maybe the whole entire world will change, even new hair styles. I think all of this will happen in America because America is special in its own way like some other countries are cleaner have different styles have different things than us. Even cultures and people are moving to America because it may be a better life for them in treating ways some other countries have schools that don’t have computers, chairs or real desks. Sometimes, America is just better for their children.
And you can still do virtual jobs but some adults want to go to that place or they may really want to do that job but they don’t have an option to do it online so they have to move wherever that job is. But best of all America has Freedom!
